[Mk2] [Turbo] Lost key!

Post by nevvo »

Guys, long story short my only key has disappeared and I'm struggling for the cheapest solution! It's a 96 turbo so assume it has an immobiliser chip inside (making it more costly: (). I have a Clifford alarm and have a spare fob for that so no issues there.

Can anyone recommend who to turn to? Guessing Mr T will have my eyes out...?
I'm in Warwickshire if anyone knows of anybody local.

Thanks,
Useless moron.

Im not aware of any mk2 having transponder keys coded to them. As for the easiest solution that depends on your diy level and how brutal your willing to be.

to remove the barrel itself requires the key turning just before the first click and pushing it a spring loaded part on the barrel to release it. I can't remember off hand if theres enough access to drill it. A locksmith may be able to pick it and get the barrel out but it's costly. Locks aren't that heavy duty id be fairly confident you could hammer into the lock a hardened piece of steel or a chisel and force the lock to turn. Or you can drill it with decent bits until eithe lock mechanism gives up or you drill past the retaining bit.

Personally id look at drilling the spring loaded part im sure it's accessible and shouldn't give much hassle to a decent bit then the barrel will just pull out

It's the dark bit in the middle you'd want to drill through

You've put my mind at ease a little there chap!

Is anyone able to confirm that Mk2s weren't coded with a transponder? Would make my life a hell of a lot easier if that's the case!

I'm reading loads of conflicting information...

Did any JDM imports come with a transponder key? I have no buttons etc on my key so I'm really not sure.

are you sure mikey? im pretty sure my stepdads old rev5 wasn't, the remote keyfob is programmed to the car but there was no chip in the key as far as i know, the easy way to check is just remove the surrounds from the steering column if your key is coded to the car there will be a pickup ring around the ignition barrel (looks like a plastic loop with wires to it)

Spoke to mr2 Ben and the chap told me that because mine is a very late rev 3 (only 500 or so off being a rev 4) it's not got a chip in the key. So I'm going to go for it, door lock coming out tomorrow night to find the number.

Having said that, Toyota told me that it did have a chip and that if need a new lock set (£1200 +VAT) and door module (I didn't hang around for the price of that).

I've been given a quote of £170 if it is a chip key and the bloke needs to come to me. Willing to chance it with mr2 Ben first though!

Buy second had lock set off someone on here is prob cheapest option.

Not sure how ignition lock is installed in MR2's but when i had a lost key issue on my old scooby i got a lock set with the entire steering column, and switched that as was easier (not a breeze mind) i felt.

....Lets just say since then i have about a million spare keys made for every car!!

I've got a barrel and a key if required. I'm guessing it was all sorted.

Both my Rev4 and Rev5 had an immobiliser. Key looks like this:

Wierd my rev3 has a button the side of the key for the central locking but no immobiliser.

I'm guessing it was an option?

Standard on UK Rev4/Rev5 as far as I am aware. They have the remote locking on a separate fob - so 90's.

The only Rev3 I've been to see had the metal key. It was a shed though so it may have been a replacement.

If the ignition lock has a green lit ring around it, there is no transponder.

If it doesn't have a green ring, it has a transponder.

The coil for the transponder key replaces the green illumination.

You are a life saver. I got green lid 😅
But it had central locking on the key and that got me confused. Thank you
