[Mk2] [Turbo] Weak Ignition maybe - reduced gap from 0.8 to 0.6

Post by b4ss »

Hi,
I have replaced coil pack/HT Leads/rotor/dizzy, all with Toyota parts.

New plugs gapped to 0.8 - car hesitates under full boost, but otherwise seems fine.

New plugs gapped to 0.6 - car runs perfectly all the way to full boost.

I don't really know where to start, maybe earthing points?

For info the car has new AEM 320lph fuel pump, and I have had the injectors tested for flow rate and spray pattern and ultrasonically cleaned.

Any ideas, or should i just leave them at 0.6?
Thanks,
Tony

did you check your ignitor? they crack and cause all sorts of missfire issues under boost.

Hi Tony,

Hope you are well!

The igniter is the same for REV3+ turbo and N/A (except beams)
The part number for it 89621-16020 and 89621-26010 <-both the same thing.
Many corollas, rav4 and others using it so easy to get used. If you want to get new, that's a different story.
I have a spare one I can borrow it if you want. Got it from fleebay for £10 as a spare.
The igniter using the chassis ground so make sure it has good connection to its bracket. If it wouldn't be grounded, you get a code 14 and no start.

Hang on, just thinking now I had similar issue few years ago and it was the tiny little hose going to the MAP sensor. Once I replaced it, there were no more hesitation.

Should this not work, you can check if the igniter has good ground with a multimeter. While working with the multimeter, you might as well check the 3 temperature sensors for the ECU. I know which wires to check at the ECU connector, just ask me if it comes down to that.

Cheers,
Julius

Glad to hear!
Yep, mine are gapped at 0.8.
I use the iridium variant bkr7eix or something like that.
Are you on copper or some precious metal?

Julius

No, there was no need to change that. Still healthy @ 250k
Did you check the lines to the MAP sensor?
I had too much time in the recent weeks, just replaced most hoses in the engine bay:)
But that's for another topic
