3rd gear crunch (

Post by Ralliart »

as per title noticed on my rev3 n/a when down shifting from 4th to 3rd i can feel it crunching. Whats the fix? rebuild or replacement (bit wary of buying a used box incase its the same as mine).

Cheers

it will cost more than a grand to put that right . gearbox out and rebuilt or you could learn to live with it

Sounds like synchro is on its way out, no quick fix it's a gearbox out job I'm afraid.

My Rev 2 GTS had the same issue between 2nd and 3rd.

I've had a word with a friend who will remove the box for £150 and mentioned a local gearbox specialist to visit for repairs.... He seems to think it can be repaired for around £500 all in depending on the price of a synchro from Toyota. Going to speak to the gearbox buy tomorrow and see what he says.

Just a thought worth looking at my last 2 it wasn't a crunch but a noticeable noise into 3rd

I checked the bushes at the end of the selector cable.... both had slots rather than a round hole!!! I used skateboard bearing, just had to play about with the washers to move them over a tad, but the "noise"went.

if its a bad crunch the guys above will be right

As mentioned, check that the linkages etc are all aligned and operating as they should be first, to rule them out.

You can try a gearbox oil change, as well as adding an extra additive but ultimately that's only going to by you some time before it gets worse. My last MR2 had a crunch down shifting from 4th to 3rd and that went away after adding some thicker gearbox oil and additive (can't remember what I used now).

It was Redline shock proof oil (pretty sure it was the heavy version).

Managed to get hold of a 2nd hand gearbox for under £100, had it fitted and all good crunch free

However now I have an ABS light on which wasn't on before !

If they took the driveshafts out the rear hubs when fitting the box they might have disturbed an ABS sensor. Worth popping the wheels off and making sure they are all still plugged in. It's a wire that comes out of the hub behind the brake disc and connects up through a grommet in the wheel arch - at the rear they go through into the engine bay and connect in there from memory.

However it's more likely that they disturbed the sensor during the work and it's now got loads of crap on it which is preventing it from reading the teeth on the driveshaft. You may have limited success trying to clean the sensor but generally speaking it's replacement time and by this age they are absolutely welded into the hubs and nigh on impossible to remove!

The last, less likely option is that you got new driveshafts with your new gearbox and they are non ABS driveshafts so they don't have the teeth on them.

In some 90s Toyotas there is a separate diagnostic procedure you can do with the PS and ABS systems to tell you where the fault lies, I don't remember if a UKNA has that or not. If it does it will be a case of shorting TC and E1 in the diagnostics connector (like you do to look for engine codes) and the ABS light will flash to tell you a code.

Cheers toxo,
spoke to my mate that did the work and he says he didnt separate the drive shafts. As you rightly stated the sensors are rusted / stuck on..! So could possibly have disturbed them or got them dirty. Will get him to check.

I did look about and read on several posts about reading the codes on the abs but I think its just the early rev2 models as I tried it on my car and just get the PS light flashing constantly.

Not wishing to hijack the thread but a bit of info if you have to change the ABS sensors

I changed my fronts for lexus ones

A FRACTION of the cost

I put how to in my thread here:-
https://www.imoc.co.uk/forums/viewtopic ... f807773bdd

Note front ones go straight in i would recommend the fronts the Lexus right on the 2 left etc, purely due to the angle the cable comes out.

The rears are a bit more involved but a kind soul on MR2DC told me how which i posted :-)
