Double check the PN, they are still available via Megazip and Amayama, though both of those services do not always have 100% accurate stock levels as they are referencing third party warehouses. This is for 1991, 3SGE, European market:

Source for PN: https://www.japan-parts.eu/toyota/eu/19 ... lock#12101

https://www.amayama.com/en/part/toyota/1210174070
https://www.megazip.net/zapchasti-dlya/ ... 1210174070

MR2 Ben's website says the UK market one (which is what I've linked above) is discontinued, but the Japan market one is not: https://mr2-ben.co.uk/products/804

The difference is the Japan market one does not have an oil level sensor hole / mount.

Thanks Sonic.

I've just ordered up the version from MR2 Ben. It's genuine Toyota but as you say doesn't allow for the oil level sensor.

I did look at the two links you posted but couldn't see anything that mentioned the sensor.

Are you saying those DO allow for the sensor to remain?

PS. Why the difference anyway? Why don't some cars have the sensor?

PPS. I now seem to recall that I had to change the sump on my old white Rev 1 at about 200k and even then about 10 years ago I had to settle for a new genuine sump without the sensor....

Yes the Amayama one and Megazip one match the European PN, which will have an oil level sensor. Japanese market ones do not.

I guess Toyota thought the European market would not check oil frequently enough, but the Japanese market would? Who knows.

I've logged in then tried four times to reply again and this stupid site still keeps telling me to log in again once I've spent 10 minutes composing my message rather than simply posting it!

Useless.

Ha.

Now it works ...typical.

I wanted to say I went with the UK based MR2 Ben non sensor part at £172 as it worked out at half the price of the sensor part once the higher purchase prices, shipping and Import Taxes were factored in.

PS Can the non sensor part be modified to take a sensor or is it a built in thing?

The sensor is a separate part, held in by 4 bolts - I guess if you can replicate the mount on the new one it would work?

Many thanks guys.

The new part arrived today from Ben and it's all set to go to the garage a week today.

Last question ... I don't have any stone chip to spray the outer surface with but I do have some Hammerite. Is it worth it? Looks like the part is powder coated from the factory.

I guess another outer layer couldn't hurt?

Edit: I don't get on here much these days save for the odd occasion begging for help but I've just noticed you're an Apollo 13 fan Wilkie.

Love that movie.

Hi Rob

I would say a coat of hammerite wont go amiss, you see if it was a british classic car there would be a designed steady flow of oil to keep the sump from rusting.

I now keep an eye on it & i put some oil on a rag & give it a wipe over (a wiping down of an old oily rag, to use an old saying)

My las sump was so rusty im glad It didnt get a glancing blow from a stray leaf!!!!

As i say i was tempted to remove the oil level sender unit form the old sump & retro fit it to the new sump. but i thought ....something bound to go wrong, i just make sure I check it each week.

Thanks for that.

Would you spray it on both sides or just the external surface?

Nor does mine now Wilkie.

I've also just done a deal with a near neighbour to rent her garage now she no longer runs a car so it'll be snug and dry when not driven and enjoyed.

OK last question.

I've been informed there is a cork sump gasket available.... Is it worth it as I think they came from the factory just fixed using sealant or am I mistaken?

Does anybody think it's worth the extra £20 or so to go with the gasket?

I think the preferred method is the silicone

it comes with a paper one which in my case leaked, after telling the garage that fitted it to use the proper silicone (just a MR2 techy advised me this)

Only thing with Cork is it does seep in time

I think others on here could advise better than I??

saw this on the MR2.com site

"As long as you follow the BGB directions, it'll seal. The main issue is getting the flange flat and the holes flattened. Sometimes they become warped by the bolts and don't truly seal "

I think theres something in that as when it was refitted the guy spent a while making sure the mating surface was flat, he scuffed the mating surface a little & used a seland he uses on the MX5s he rebuilds (hes a specilist in the MX5 scene and was a MR2 owner in the past

Its more likely to leak with a cork gasket than without.

in use the clening the surface with the wheel as in this video is what my guy did as i say just called him he said because Stevie Wonder wearing boxing gloves that put it on warped the mating surface so he spent a while correcting it all
