How long before you bought the car was the oil pump allegedly changed? how many miles on that pump? was it a pattern or genuine pump? I would drop the oil and swap the filter. see if there is anything in either of them.

check for fault codes,

drop your oil if that's your concern. you will know where you stand right away then.

do you know anyone near you with the same year MR2 to quickly borrow the ecu? that would give you the answer right away.

no worries, mines started at about 6k, I think the more it leaked the less max RPM's I could get.
