Patchy red paint on MR2 after rain

Hi All, I have a red 1985 Toyota MR2 for the past 7 years. Prior to me owning it, it was resprayed at some stage. Car is used for summer runs only & rarely used in the rain. Had it on a run 2 weeks ago & it really rained & paint is destroyed. Its like the sun bleaches the paint thru' the...

Re: Handbrake help needed

Yippee, passed the test today. Got the handbrake imbalance down to 36% (>50% is a fail) with a little bodge. While experimenting, I found if I put a few washers behind the bracket that holds the sleeve of the cable from the caliper, the handbrake improved on the bad side. Have an old rusted set of c...

Re: Handbrake help needed

Thanks for the replies. I could nearly recite your guide now Paul, I've read it so often in case I missed something. Is a refurb kit of any use for the handbrake mechanism. Not sure how much is included in the kit.

Re: Handbrake help needed

Thanks Paul, I've followed your advice to the letter but its still sh!t on right hand side. Got my friendly mechanic to call around & we reset them again as per your instructions & started & pumped the brake several times before connecting cables. Left is OK but right hand side is crap. ...

Re: Handbrake help needed

Thanks, James, but I've all new cables. It looks like the left is activating a good bit before the right. Doing some testing at the weekend, I found by putting a few washers behind the arm that holds the sleeve of the cable away form the caliper on the weak side, it even's up the handbrake effort on...

Re: Handbrake help needed

Just noticed that the spring to the rear of the adjuster under the centre of the car is missing on my MK1A. Does this do anything other that stop it rattling about?.

Handbrake help needed

It's test time again for my MK1A & each year I have issues with the handbrake. Last year the imbalance was 50% and greater that 50% imbalance is a fail so just scraped thru. Foot brake effort on both sides is practically identical. Figures are below. Last week I decided to change the handbrake c...

Re: Rear bonnet - gas strut

Hi Chris,

If yo get a chance to do some measurements & take a pic, that would be great. Looking to do similar engine lid strut to my MK1A. Will have to scout aroung the local scrapyard & see what's about. If I had measurements, that would be fantastic.

Thanks, Tim

Re: Intermittent missfire & flickering lights help

Spark plugs. I had an intermittent misfire that sounded like this and turned out to be cured when i put new iridium plugs in. Alex Reckon you were correct Alex. I replaced the plugs & it's running perfectly since. Misfire gone. Sailed thru' the test this morning. Well, sailed close to the wind ...

Re: Intermittent missfire & flickering lights help

Thanks for the replies. Dizzy cap & rotor arm is fairly new Toyota part so hopefully not that. Bought some new plugs today so I will replace them tonight. Does the throttle position sensor have anything to do with the largish plug mounted to the back of the TVIS (Don't have my CD version of the ...

Intermittent missfire & flickering lights help

Hi All, My MK1A has developed an intermittent misfire lately. I thought it was the plug leads or coil lead as I could see them sparking in the dark. I've replaced them with new leads but still having the issue. When idling it idles grand for a while & the stutters & resumes normal idle. On t...

Re: mr t parts

Just priced a set of Plug leads & coil lead from my local Mr T & was shocked - 186 Euro which is about 150 pound Sterling. Some price. I see them for around 25 pound on E-bay so that's where I'll be going.

Erratic idle MK1A

Hi All, I had my MK1A out on an Old Skool Toyota run yesterday & all went fine except for an erratic idle when in neutral. I did about 200 miles yesterday & mostly the car idled ad 800 - 1000 revs but occasionally during the run, the idle dropped to 200 - 400 revs & the engine cut out. I...
