Thanks, Spudgun
It now makes sense. I couldn't figure how there would be enough space to slide the new bush in with the rack sticking out of the housing. If the rack goes back in past the end of the housing, there should be plenty of room.
Thanks,
T.

Re: Knocking Steering Rack!
Hi Spudgun,
2 questions - how did you get the bush out & to open the knuckle/joint nearest the bush, is it a matter of folding back the tabs & loosening. I am a bit nervous about going at the steering so may leave it for my mechanic.
Thanks,
T

Re: Knocking Steering Rack!
If your rack is knocking like mine, its the nylon bush inside the rack rather than the rubber or prothane bushings that connect the rack to the body. I recently got one from Mr T for about a fiver. Here' some pics of the bush: http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm17/TigerTimKerry/IMGA0254.jpg http:/...

Hi All, I'm based in South West Ireland & while a 600 mile journey and a ferry trip would take too long with my MR2, I have just noticed that Mersea is only about 40 miles from Stansted airport. Ryanair fly daily from my local airport(Kerry). :?: Is it worth the trip. :?: I figure I could fly ou...

Re: MK1 SCALEXTRIC ?
Always wanted a Scalextric set. Had similar about thirty years ago but not the real thing. Dropped loads of hints to the Missus before Christmas( & every Christmas for the past few years) but still ended up with the aftershave & the woolly jumper. Reckon I'll have to go & buy one mysef o...

I have never changed the gear oil in the MR2 but had to change it a few times in my previous camper, a Talbot Express. The best way I found of doing it was similar to a previous post. I originally bought a few bottles of gear oil, the ones with the hose attached. I also got a few feet of clear hose....

How do you join the lip (i.e. the bit over the wheel) to the inner arch. I was thinking of drilling some holes in the outer arch & doing spot welds. Good or bad idea?.

Re: New MR2 owner, knocking noises from front
Worn steering bush seems to be causing the knocking on my MK1A. I ordered one from my local Toyota dealer about 4 months ago but they don't seem to be able to get one. Will look at getting one turned on a lathe by one of my local engineering shops if I fail to get one before my test next May.

Sorry, I wasn't suggesting I Arc weld the panels - just that I can arc weld fairly good but haven't much experience of Mig or using lighter guage steel.

Steering rack
Does anyone know if the steering rack on the MK1B is the same as the MK1A. I would guess they are but before I go to the trouble of getting one off a MK1B car in the scrapyard, I need to be sure. I have stripped everything else that was salvageable off it. There is a nylon/plastic bush worn inside m...

Thanks for all the replies. Thinking of having a go myself. Can Arc weld quite well but haven't used the Mig very much. Must get in some practice before I attack the car.

Fitting new rear arches
When you are replacing the rear arches do you cut out the rusty bits & weld the new panel on top of what's left & after grinding down the weld, hide the lip with a skim of filler or do you try & get the cut exactly to allow you to butt weld the new panel to the old. The first option woul...

Hi, I've had that problem recently. When driving, no problem, but stop/start driving was a nightmare. I found that I had caused the problem myself. The engine was idling very fast so I was trying everything to cure this. In the engine bay, there is a bracket (quadrant, half moon type - Can't remembe...

Are bushing kits from the States really that bad?
Are the bushing kits from the USA really that bad or would they do what I want. I only put up about 2000 miler/year. The rubber bushings on my MK1A are fairly tired & I could do with uprating them. Got a price from Fensport for the complete kit - £123.85 which converts to 178 EURO but from TwosR...

Patching a hole - what steel do you use
Hi, I need to weld in a few patches to my MK1A - one in the floor, the pillar at the drivers side where the door is hinged & behind the rear mudflap. What type of sheet steel shoule I use. Shoule I just get a bonnet from the scrappy & cut pieces from it or buy some new sheet metal. What guag...

Need to refurb the mounting bracket for the side mirrors. I want to rub down the metal first with wet & dry paper before spraying but I am unsure of the grades. Don't want to leave any marks by using sandpaper that's too rough. Anyone familiar with the grades of paper & what I should use. Th...

Low idle speed = low oil pressure
When I bought my MK1A last April, the idle speed was very high idled at about 2000 rpm. Lately Ive got around to doing a few jobs on it & have now got it ticking over nicely at about 1000 rpm & it sounds fine. However, the oil pressure needle now sits about the 1st quarter mark when idlin...
