first of all i checked the tensioner, all seemed well. i took the cam cover off to inspect the timing chain and the chain was slack over the cam sprockets, i turned the crank clockwise without the tensioner in and check timing, the timing was ok and the chain is nice and tought now, im goin to get a...

can i just unbolt timing chain tensioner, remove inspect and replace. also can i check timing without having to remove timing cover? cheers

well i think i found the problem, the spark plugs needed changing, water had gone through the engine lid, and because the engine plastic cover was off it had dropped down to the plugs.
i do agree i dont really want to break it.

thanks once again pete! i found out why it was running rough, the plastic engine cover was missing and as the car had been stood, rain water had dripped through the engine lid into the spark plug holes, have to get four new spark plugs tomorrow, fingers crossed it will be ok.

i may be breakibg this one if i cant repair it, how much is a 2nd hand trd kit like mine?

is there a downloadable bgb repair manual, im find it quite hard to get any info on how to check timing or replacing tensioner. i have a feeling the chain may have skipped a tooth.

thanks very much pete, il look over the weekend hopefully, fingers crossed......i said id never buy a mk3 but it certainly puts a smile on my face around the bends even limited to 3k rpm.....hopefully i can sort this out and drive it properly

ok, bridged 4 and 13, and got steady flashes of abs light, im assuming thats all clear, surely if it was something electrical like a sensor it would throw a fault up?

i have a mk3, i thought that was mk2

under the hood it has extra earth cables, ive done the maf, no luck. i will check coils tonight etc, then im going to to compression weekend and gut cats, if theyre not gutted already. it seems weird to me as limp mode is 4.5k rpm im told? no cel warning neither which is weird, can you do a papercli...

anyone with any suggestions, im baffled, it wont rev past 3k, i can find no info online other than cats may be blocked? or chain tensioner is slack?
