Re: mr2 mk1 eating fuel
Mine started drinking it recently & it turned out to be the front left brake caliper sticking on. Kwikfit put a new caliper on, cleaned up the other 3 & bled the system up for £70, would have done it myself but that price didn't seem too bad all-in. Drinks tons less fuel now. Are any of your...

Re: Timing mystery - absolutely doing my head in - please help
Might not be thinking straight here but is there a vacuum advance thingy & could that account for the 'extra' degrees needed? [edit] scrub that, went and had a look at my spare dizzy in the garage, they don't have a vacuum advance do they #-o The connector has 3 terminals.., couldn't be that the...

Re: Cruise control on a MR2 MK!?
Never did manage to find an authentic right-hand drive cruise control stalk switch.. although the modified Starlet wiper lever worked fine, with the LED's and their resistors mounted remotely in the dash (used a spare blanking plate by the coin holder IIRC). That was the only real problem I came acr...

Re: Sealtbelt tensioners weak
Interesting response from Mr T. He quoted £38 for a 'replacement spring element', then rang back to say, very sorry sir, no stock left at the mothership

Re: Sealtbelt tensioners weak
You could say that really for the existing belt I've already got, I guess - I don't think the car's ever been in a high-energy collision, from looking, but I don't have any proof of that. I'd certainly avoid a belt from a mangled scrapper though.. good point :thumleft: I'm hoping Mr T isn't ridiculo...

Re: Sealtbelt tensioners weak
Sounds like the only real solution is a newie, or a good secondhand one out of a scrapper then eh.. Cheers guys, just thought maybe there was something obvious / easily replaceable etc. I'll give mr T & maybe some breakers a try, or just live with it

Sealtbelt tensioners weak
My seatbelt retracts very lazily, is there any way to regain it's vigour from it's younger days apart from replacing the gubbins?
If not, how easy is it to replace whatevers gone weak & what exactly would I need..
(these are standard mk1b seatbelts)

Re: fiddled with front lights and now it wont come on! HELP!
Sometimes ground connections can trick you, sometimes some great big hulking lump of bodywork that *looks* like it should be a good ground, isn't.. because it's fastened down with a layer of insulating poo between the panels.. and try scraping the surface a bit, make sure you get a good connection, ...

Re: fiddled with front lights and now it wont come on! HELP!
a tail-light bulb can be used as a makeshift voltmeter.. wrap a bit of wire around the body, use the wire end as a probe, press the 'pip' of the bulb to some grounded metalwork.
See if you can get the bulb to light up off the wire feeding the HU

Re: fiddled with front lights and now it wont come on! HELP!
The relay that went on mine was another colour again, black. I think there's 3 relays in total on mine that do the headlights.. Looking at the diagram I've got, the feeds for both the dipped beam and the high beam filaments are commoned together so in theory, if the diagram's right, both sides shoul...

Re: fiddled with front lights and now it wont come on! HELP!
Aye checking fuses sounds like a good plan :thumleft: If really stumped and it comes back to the relay, you can test it by removing it & (briefly!) connecting the coil terminals across the battery - you should hear a sharp, distinct 'TICK' when you connect it, then another when you disconnect it...

Re: fiddled with front lights and now it wont come on! HELP!
More than likely wide of the mark here, but something to look at if all else fails.. I recently had a similar prob where one light worked and the other didn't. ISTR the right hand side was ok & the LHS one wouldn't light. I too changed both bulbs to no avail. The problem turned out to be the rel...

I think I've got those cheap bushes on too; they've not given a problem, but I don't do many miles either..
Along with everything else I buttered them liberally with copperslip in a mad half hour so I guess that will make for a bit of a test as time goes by

Re: Steering wheel problem
I had a look on ebay for you & I can only find one guy who has the front part of the centre in blue, at the mo.. but I might have missed something. The auto cancel, I'm a bit puzzled about that, the spinning-jenny that does for that is usually a fixed part of the indicator switch. as already sta...

Re: Head Gasket - peace of mind..
Should I worry about the steam? There's not a great deal of it, I'm quite possibly only noticing it because I'm 'looking for problems'. Honestly can't recall if it's any more or less than it's always done.. does everyone else get it when the engine's below full temp?

Head Gasket - peace of mind..
Recently had a problem with the cooling system which resulted in partial loss of coolant (leak at the top of the rusty radiator). Resulted in a hunting idle when cold. Caught it fairly quickly, car was driven only a couple of miles with low coolant. Managed to plug up the hole temporarily, & the...

Re: Steering wheel problem
The centre (with the 2 plastic prongs) mates up with a rear plastic 'shell' which carries the 2 female receptacles for the centre's 'prongs'. The rear shell has 3 holes, which take 3 short (M4??) machine screws passing through from the reverse side, to secure it to the rear of the steering wheel. II...
