Re: Fluid around spark plugs

Thanks I panicked a bit at first, then logically thought.. can't be.. but didn't know the anatomy perfectly enough to be sure! I pushed a few sheets of kitchen towel into the holes then blew around with an airgun - luckily, I did leave the plugs in - that seemed to do the trick to dry it out. Thanks...

Re: Cruise control

Just enough to satisfy myself that the whole thing is fully working as Mr T intended, but no huge great drags yet - guess I'm best checking with the insurance before keeping it. Not sure if it's classed as a modification seeing as in many respects it can be seen as original gear. Certainly felt like...

Fluid around spark plugs

Can coolant leak out and pool around the spark plugs, or is fluid found there more likely to be rainwater? I blew a load of fluid out of the space around the plugs earlier on & started worrying about the head gasket. Am I right, coolant would have to flow uphill from any leak in the head gasket ...

Hard info to find - two big thumbs up Jimi, thanks :D Soon as it gets light I'll have a gander.. [edit] yeah.. it's like the bottom pic on mine. This is getting frighteningly close to the bit where I apply power :? ==================== Okay.. powered up.. no smoke Checked all the wires I could.. not...

Re: drastic mot falure ....help!

Buy a welder & hire a barn for a day? You could probably get that out of £300 & you'd get to keep the tools for future..

Re: Cruise control

Got a final last question before it's all ready for firing up. The vacuum pump has three ports - two stubs for hoses, and a hole. The BGB shows the hole with an artistic 'puff of smoke' which makes me believe it's the air exhaust port. The other two ports are marked 'ACT' and 'VAC'. The pump, switch...

Re: Bumper Stripes

There's a chap on ebay does them, 'signcreate' is his username, ordered a sheet of decals from him for mine & they were great. Very slightly larger (by a mm or so) but otherwise pretty much exact replicas of the original decals. Might be worth a try. Couldn't vouch for the exact shade of silver ...

On the bright side, I couldn't think of a better situation than someone capable of their own welding looking after it

Good luck with Uni!

Re: Electrical problem after washing car

A dollop of crud caught underneath the regulator, right where the capacitor sits with it's bare metal legs, getting conductive when wet? Or, just something bizarre going on inside the regulator, maybe a crack in it (it's a 2-part shell design), damp getting inside & sending it haywire.. there's ...

Re: Electrical problem after washing car

This is from '4A-FE, 4A-GE Engine Repair Manual Sep., 1989' ostensibly for the Corolla, Carina II and Celica, 4A-GE AE92 series. I'm not 100% certain it's correct for our cars but hopefully it's not too far away: http://img502.imageshack.us/img502/1034/alternnd9.jpg http://img259.imageshack.us/img25...

Re: Electrical problem after washing car

Without checking the book, my money's on a blown rectifier pack.. could easily be wrong Don't understand it 'repairing' itself though.. blown diodes don't usually do that :-k (try pulling all the fuses and then looking for that 4 amp leak?) three alternators? - sounds like something in the car is im...

Re: Towing dolly

You need to watch the towing weights of the 2 cars. If you have a heavy enough towing car the car being towed does not need to be braked. I'm looking at a Ford Transit 'Connect' 220, 1.8L diesel van at the moment, for a towing vehicle - don't be misled by the word 'Transit', these are pretty small,...

Re: Exhaust Manifold Removal

If you're able to hook up with someone with a welding set, could you weld a length of M10 stud to it? That worked a dream for me when I was removing shock absorber bolts on an escort van recently. Gives you a nice big handle and the heat helps loosen things. Needs to be reasonably heavy gauge stud e...

Re: Towing dolly

Was offered a set of electrics & a towing board with it, that carries lights and reg plate, but no - don't think there are any brakes on it; it's just coupled to the towing vehicle's hitch by a rigid (pretty darn heavy) steel boom. How do brakes normally work on a towed transporter contraption.....

Towing dolly

Been offered a spectacles-type towing dolly. Got to thinking about towing Mk1's.. It has a pair of light aircraft wheels about 1.5 maybe 2 feet apart on a short fixed axle, a boom transverse to that, that couples to the towing hitch; and a pair of square frames ('spectacles') that are mounted above ...

Re: Corroded alloys

I don't really know much about tyres but I noticed that sometimes when replacing a tyre, they brush a sort of latex paint round the rims first, and sometimes they don't.. I take it this is some kind of sealing compound.. It's usually obvious to see the latex paint stuff has been used, as you can see...

Re: I've got a problem with the horn (seriously, I have!)

Why not find the hot (+ve) side of the horn itself, then rig up a length of wire that you can use as a 'jump lead' to short straight from battery + to the horn. Then next time it does it, try the wire - the horn should beep normally. If it doesn't, the horn itself is at fault. if it sounds fine whil...
