Re: Regular hunting after start
Fault found.. great big leak at the front end. Not sure if it's the hose connections or the radiator itself yet, but it doesn't look good as the radiator sure looks like it's seen better days. I had the hoses off last year and replaced the Toyota spring clips with jubilee clips.. and I remember bein...

Regular hunting after start
Just started doing this today - I noticed after startup that the cold idle seemed much higher than usual (2.5, maybe 2.7 k -ish as opposed to about 2k). Then, within 30 secs or so the engine started a very regular, rhythmic hunting, maybe 6 or 700 rpm, up to 3k-ish, down again, up again.. Took her f...

Re: Frozen brake?
Not 100% sure because I've not had someone run alongside & look to see which wheel, front or rear, is locking on the gravel - but going off the difference in hand-felt temperatures I think it's the front that's locking rather than the rear, just because the front's massively hotter. The handbrak...

Re: Frozen brake?
Cheers Max I guess I'm clearing the garage out tomoz & going to get myself a pot of more appropriate grease, then up on stands & I'll get all 4 wheels off.
Brake cleaner spray, the ether-smelling stuff from Halfords etc, plus an airline - that should do a good job of removing the old grease?

Re: Frozen brake?
I used copper grease liberally over everything in sight except the front of the pads.
Then I read IMOC and started slapping my forehead.

Frozen brake?
MOT on tuesday, I'm sure the car heard me say so.. so she's decided to jam her nearside front caliper hard on :| At least I think that's what's happened - feels like the car's 'held back' when driving, like the handbrake's been left on.. and when driven over gravel, she slews to the left and leaves ...

Horrible noise on startup
Noticed recently that there's been an increasingly nasty din just after starting the engine. I put the key in, turn to 'start', and as the engine starts turning over there's this whiney clatter begins; it seems to come from right behind the driver. The engine fires and starts to run, and the whiney,...

Re: Dodgy Economy lights
I guess if you fitted a boost guage to a naturally aspirated car, high vacuum on the guage is economy driving..... You could actually buy this as a retrofit kit from Halfords in the early 90's, I fitted one to my n/a Capri at the time. The kit comprised a rubber hose that you connected to a spare s...

How long to go flat?
I had the alternator go bad in a cloud of white smoke last year on my 1989 sunroof Mk1b. Prior to the alternator actually blowing, I'd blamed the battery for the electrics acting strangely, and had renewed it. So she's had a brand new battery and a new alternator, at the end of last summer. I went o...

Re: BGB - how to find one?
I bought one of those 'instant downloads' off Ebay - seemed great at first but upon trying to work with it, an awful lot of the info was incorrect for my vehicle. Still haven't really figured out which variant it's for, but seems like some kind of US variant.. basically worth roughly what I paid, wh...

Preventive against damp?
Is it ok to spray inside the dizzy with damp repellant spray, and if so, what's the best product to use. Same question re the spark plug wells. Are there any other components that would benefit from damp proofing? My '2 suffers quite badly on it's first run every time especially in the winter; she s...

Re: Headlamp bulb
just had 'dim/dip relay no. 2', mounted below washer bottle in frunk, out.. doesn't seem to operate off a 12v battery & a couple of meter probes, think that might be it.. the copper wire inside seems to have corroded through, right at it's connection to the terminal. Might be able to bodge it wi...

Noticed my nearside dipped beam has died.. does anyone happen to know a part number for the bulb?
Perhaps I should replace both sides with some kind of high-brightness replacement?
