Not sure if its any help but when looking for a leak in the boot I removed the rear light holders and found silver tinfoil being used as a reflector, may be worth a try.

Checked out the black MK2 that parks round the corner is a T Bar and the reg starts with a H has one of those jap inport type stickers in the back window.

Just been to the shops and the red one i mentioned is parked down the road number plate starts with a K so different to the one you mentioned . In Plympton Ridgway shops G reg,Went to the top of the road past the shops and then turned right at the roundabout.

If you have no rear side lights or number plate lights it is a relay that sits above the fuse box in drivers footwell.
Not sure which one as there are three but one is for the rear fog light so you can swop this to see if it fixes the problem.

Have you lost the rear sidelights and number plate lights As i had a problem with losing the dash lights that i put down to a loose fuse. Turned out to be the relay was on its way out £10 for the auto electrian to check/find fault changed the rear fog light relay so i could drive in the dark £20 for...
