Old thread, but MR2 Ben has replacement aerials very reasonably priced, with reasonably clear fitting instructions. Antenna/gear replacement for original aerials is strictly for people with time on their hands!

You have probably lost the earth somewhere in the aerial-fixing process. Run new earth, ad things will probably light up (in a good way)!

I had a problem f the installer having used the bolt-in cage as the earth. Maybe run a new secure earth wire and work from there. Eating t the amp or the aerial is not the way to go.
