Re: How bad is rust?

Learning to weld would be a good idea however I have no driveway  I'm going to have a look at a rev3 soon which has had its sills done two years ago. How long does a good will job last and how long does a bad job last? Also the buying guide talks about gearbox problems on earlier rev1/2 but do...

Re: How bad is rust?

Another option if you have somewhere to work on the car is; Buy a used MIG and an angle grinder and cutting discs. Practice on some scrap metal for a while and watch YouTube to learn to weld. Then patch or properly repair yourself with a big bag of self satisfaction. I did my driver's side includin...

Re: How bad is rust?

No not really. Aussie..... I have used gaffa tape to get me through the last 3 mots on my daily - rotten front arches. So this year I've treated the old girl.... so some similarish coloured tape is on its way instead of spacesuit silver. 1000 for both sides, a proper coachworks place may charge mor...

Re: How bad is rust?

You can patch it to get by as a cheaper, shorter term fix or properly solve for around 400-500 a side. Thanks for the quick reply. I just read another thread where people have suggested similar price. I thought these proper fixes ran into £1000+ a side? Lets say the rust on one sill is about 6 inch...

How bad is rust?

How bad is a bit of rust on the sills that's not even picked up in MOT? I am being cheap because I can either afford the car or the insurance so my budget is low and for my budget most have small amounts of rust. After driving some of these cars I am in love with the mk 2 and really want those pop u...

Re: getting a MK3

As a MK3 owner I went for one of the decat manifolds, the precats are not required in the UK, and will easily pass emissions without them. Also Check the rear crossmember carefully for rust I know I read that the pre-cats were only required for the US market but I want to know other than oil consum...

getting a MK3

Thinking about getting an pre-facelift MK3 now. I have read the guides on MR2roc and advice given here previously. Is extreme oil consumption the only give away of a pre-cat failure? When viewing a car what else can I check to determine if the pre-cats are failing and going back into the engine? I c...

if you live in London, what insurance company do you use for your mk2 NA?

Hello All, I am under 25, clean driving record, never had any points, never made an insurance claim and never had an accident but I think I have a high risk post code. I was going to get an mk2 after earning my 3rd NCB but now the insurance prices seem to have increased so I might not be able to aff...

Re: Lift-Off over steer question

Go get training. Companies out there that specialise in teaching people how to drive sideways. Learn in a controlled environment, leave with new skills.in The heat of battle you do your natural reaction. Which is usually overcorrect. A 'silver' day with us and I'd have you drifting with confidence....

Re: Lift-Off over steer question

Okay so from your post before it seems one would have to really try in order to induce the lift off oversteer/spin in an MR layout? When you say straighten up the fronts do you mean with reference to the direction of understeer/travel (by using opposite lock) or with reference to the car? And what ...

Re: Lift-Off over steer question

Tyres make a huge difference in the way the grip let's go. The MR handles great with a proper chassis tune and tyres, you can really cover ground quickly but dont expect to throw it into corners like a hot hatch. Best advice to anyone is get some track time to really explore the limits of both your...

Re: Lift-Off over steer question

If you are mid corner with suspension loaded up and you want to stop the car in a hurry you have a few things. 1. You have ABS so the car will still steer under braknig. 2. The car (like almost every car in the road) will naturally understeer when you hit the brakes and it'll want to try and head i...

Re: Lift-Off over steer question

Well yes you are right, this might not happen on public roads but what if it does. Lets say something similar happened on track where its a tight bend and there is an obstruction ahead and you really want to stop the car. Would you still keep on the throttle and only gently lift off? If you are mid...

Re: Lift-Off over steer question

Hello All, I am new here looking to get an MR-2 mk2. I have never driven a mid-rear engine car or a rwd but from reading I know it is prone to snap/lift-off oversteer specially the earlier models. I know from driving fwd cars what lift-off oversteer is like. I have read how people counter snap/lift...
