The heat is very localised. The pulley itself was cold to touch but the bolt itself too hot to handle. The bolt wasn't glowing red just very hot. Very useful tool and much more precise than a gas burner.
No need to replace the pulley albeit I was advised to replace the bolt.

Update: Bolt & pulley off. Local mobile mechanic arrived (for cash). Bolt wouldn't budge with the cordless impact gun. Been renovating my MkII, Rev II 3SGTE and have come across several parts with Yamaha stamped onto them.
The latest is the TVIS block which has Toyota at one end and Yamaha at the other.
Purely out of interest does anyone know the history of this relationship?

Thanks for the suggestion. There are no holes in the pulley. There are a couple of small recesses on the rim but these are timing marks.
The sump will be coming off shortly so will check out the earlier suggestion.

Clutch is a ceramic racing clutch - done by the previous owner so no worries with that. It's hard work at times but OK.

You need to be very careful using the dishwasher. The tablets contain caustic which eats aluminium and any soft metals. It will even pit mild steel.
I use white spirit and carb cleaner. I've tried Jizer but it never really seems to be as effective.
