Re: Dist end cam cap bolts.

Thanks.
I'd been told they need to be loosened to allow it to come out. It seemed a bit tight so will try again.

Dist end cam cap bolts.

Need to replace the distributor O-ring and get the dist off to clean it up. Had a first go at releasing the bolts but stuck solid. Actually sheared the torx bit but the bolts still OK - Phew. Bolts now soaking in Ease-it and giving them a sharp tap with the hammer each time I pass the engine (it's o...

Re: Safest way to lock engine to remove bottom pulley.

The heat is very localised. The pulley itself was cold to touch but the bolt itself too hot to handle. The bolt wasn't glowing red just very hot. Very useful tool and much more precise than a gas burner.
No need to replace the pulley albeit I was advised to replace the bolt.

Re: Safest way to lock engine to remove bottom pulley.

Update: Bolt & pulley off. Local mobile mechanic arrived (for cash). Bolt wouldn't budge with the cordless impact gun. Used an induction heater (amazing tool which sits on top of the bolt and heats it up in seconds) to apply heat direct to the bolt. Straight out as easy as and all done in under ...

Re: Best way to flush coolant while engine out of car.

Thanks.
Always prefer to keep it simple if possible.
I've seen quite a few flakes of rust and don't want them blocking anything like the smaller ports on the turbo.

Best way to flush coolant while engine out of car.

The previous owner replaced the radiator and all hoses but I can see that he didn't properly flush out the system. The engine is out the car at the moment and I can see that the water pump is u/s and will be replaced this weekend. As I've dismantled the stat housing and various coolant pipes (supply...

Toyota MR2 with Yamaha parts.

Been renovating my MkII, Rev II 3SGTE and have come across several parts with Yamaha stamped onto them.
The latest is the TVIS block which has Toyota at one end and Yamaha at the other.
Purely out of interest does anyone know the history of this relationship?

Re: Safest way to lock engine to remove bottom pulley.

Thanks for the suggestion. There are no holes in the pulley. There are a couple of small recesses on the rim but these are timing marks.
The sump will be coming off shortly so will check out the earlier suggestion.

Safest way to lock engine to remove bottom pulley.

Been reading through the forum and there seems to be lots of debate about this. I have the engine out and need to change the water pump and cambelt. I can see that getting the bolt loose on the bottom pulley will be a tough one and have a very long bar. What's the safest and easiest way to lock the ...

Re: Turbo oil lines - replacement options.

Had a chat with Trevor & Paul at TCB. Great guys and have all the parts at the right prices.
Can't believe that they're just down the road from me.
I'll be having them on speed dial for the next few weeks while I finish off the car.

Re: Turbo oil lines - replacement options.

Hi mate, there are many things I'd buy off ebalg but a car is not one of them. My MR2 is a Mk II RevII. I bought it 2 years ago off a local guy who'd found it in a barn laid up with only 35000 miles (genuine) on the clock. I drove it around for a month then put it on my garage while - busy with othe...

Turbo oil lines - replacement options.

Just spoke to local Toyota dealer and these are no longer available. I've been advised that they should be replaced as part of a turbo overhaul, or at least thoroughly cleaned out. Are there any aftermarket options that don't involve eblag and some guy in a shed in China? MkII Rev II 3 SGTE. I'm sur...

Engine bay heat shield mat - replacement options.

The black mat that sits on the bulkhead is rather tatty and may clean up but replacement insulation sheets seem cheap enough. As the engine is out I could easily replace it. I've had a look around and been chatting with a company called "Car Insulation" in Nuneaton but they are worried abo...

Colour co-ordination in engine bay.

I'm about to embark on a complete clean and tidy of the engine & engine bay on my Mk 2, Rev 2 3SGTE. The car is currently red (pink) and will be resprayed to original 3E5 as the last stage. The engine is currently out so I can be bold. I've got no colour co-ordination and rely on the wife to dre...

Re: Engine out - what else is worth doing while on the bench?

Many thanks.
Happy to leave the gas porting off the list.
Clutch is a ceramic racing clutch - done by the previous owner so no worries with that. It's hard work at times but OK.
All other bits defo, and a good clean and probably repaint of the engine bay. She needs to be nice & shiny.

Re: Engine out - what else is worth doing while on the bench?

Many thanks. Water pump and seals defo. I did the Hose from hell the hard way when I laid the car up for the winter. As I pulled more bits off to check & clean, and replace the stock I/C I noticed the clutch slave cylinder and oil in the turbo with plenty of shaft play. Hence the decision to pul...

Engine out - what else is worth doing while on the bench?

Been trying to avoid this for some time now but finally decided - the cambelt, clutch slave cylinder and turbo need sorting. The previous owner had also snapped a bolt so there's only 2 holding the exhaust to the turbo outlet. I'm thinking I might gasflow the inlet side. Is this worth the effort or ...

Re: GReddy IC Fan

Just picked up a Spal puller fan from Proalloy Motorsport. Just waiting for the fitting kit (Demon Tweaks). It's a 7.5 inch unit and seems to be about right. I managed to find a shroud fitting kit on eblag - 2 simple plates that allow fitting front & back. The connectors need changing but that s...

Rust in water stat housing.

In the process of renovating a 3S GTE (Mk II Rev II) and pulled the stat housing off at the weekend. Plan is to do the HFH while I'm in the area. The housing was thick with rust. The previous owner had changed the radiator and all the pipes under the car. Am I looking at the residue of rad replaceme...

Re: Part Cleaning

You need to be very careful using the dishwasher. The tablets contain caustic which eats aluminium and any soft metals. It will even pit mild steel.
I use white spirit and carb cleaner. I've tried Jizer but it never really seems to be as effective.
