Complete MK1b Engine for sale (needs a bit of work)

Having just transplanted the engine from my MK1 because I thought my old one was terminal, it turns out it wasn't as bad as initially thought. So...I have for sale, an engine from my MK1b. Basically, it lost compression in cylinders 3 and 4 due to a small coolant jet in the head being blocked and ca...

Re: Is my engine dead?

Not at the moment. It's coming out of my car in a few days. I'll get the cylinder head back off once it's out and take some pics. The little groove was initially noticed when I got the head gasket done a couple of years ago but it would have been a mission to get the block skimmed too so we decided ...

Re: MK1a engine in MK1b?

Thank you. It is a lottery but I figure it can't be worse than my dead engine. And the replacement only has 76k under its belt so fingers crossed. Here's a question then...at which point did they change the engine types? My MR2 was registered on 17/09/1987. The replacement is coming from a car regis...

MK1a engine in MK1b?

Hi again, Following on from my previous post about my dead engine, I've managed to source a replacement but I've just realised it's coming out of a 1985 MK1a model. Should it be a straight swap? Or will I need to change some bits to make it work? Or have I just made a huge mistake and bought somethi...

Re: Is my engine dead?

A groove on the flat of the block where it would meet the head gasket.

Re: Is my engine dead?

Thanks guys.

It turns out there is a slight groove in the engine block around cylinder 4.

It's cheaper to get a replacement engine...

On that note, does anyone want to buy a 1987 MR2 engine?

2 good cylinders...😉

Is my engine dead?

Hi guys, I think my engine might be done. All of a sudden, it started running really rough and having had a compression test done, cylinders 1 and 2 are running around 190psi. Cylinders 3 and 4 are running on about 25!! Has anyone come across this before? Am I missing something simple or is this it ...

Re: Lost Clutch Hydraulics

Well...I've managed to source one for £22 posted so I'm happy.

I think I'd get more satisfaction out of driving it and being able to change gear hassle free.

Re: Lost Clutch Hydraulics

Ah. No, it's just a small leak that I can see coming from the rubber seal where the clutch pedal attaches to the master cylinder. I can still drive it after pumping the pedal a few times at the start of a journey to build the pressure but it's only going to get worse so I've ordered a replacement cy...

Re: Lost Clutch Hydraulics

Turns out it is the master cylinder.

Most of my clutch hydraulic fluid has ended up under the carpet in the drivers footwell!

At least it's an easy fix!

Lost Clutch Hydraulics

Hi everyone - some advice please! Over the last few weeks, my clutch pedal has been getting more and more spongy. It's more noticeable at the start of my journey and gets better the more I use it but this morning, I couldn't get it into gear and on looking at the clutch fluid reservoir, it was linge...

Hi,

I've just sent the hallowed shim bank back to Limey so it should be with you soon.

Re: shim bank and valve adjustment tool

Hi,

I've been pointed in your direction because I'm in need of some valve shims...

I have a list of the ones I need (there are 14 in total with thicknesses varying between 3mm and 3.3mm).

Who do I need to go to, to make a purchase?

Cheers!

Valve Shims

Hi everyone,

I'm in the process of sorting the heag gasket on my MK1b and I'm now in need of some new valve shims.

Does anyone know where I would be able to get some?

I know the thickness of the ones I need, but have no idea where to start!

Thanks,

James

Re: Head Gasket Going?

I think I'll chuck it at a garage and get them to diagnose it properly rather than me messing about with it and potentially making it worse. I certainly can't smell any oil in the coolant but it has gone a nice shade of brown even though I replaced it with brand new mixture and flushed it out comple...

Re: Head Gasket Going?

bu88er. Any tips on how to do a decent DIY fix without breaking the bank? Or the car?

If there is a decent online guide that would be good!

Re: Head Gasket Going?

Well this is what I'm dealing with...

This was just at idle...after 20 minutes ticking over followed by a 20 minute drive.

I quite literally disappear in a puff of smoke whenever I drive anywhere!
