Recommended Machine Shop
I've recently stripped down my blown engine and i'm now ready to get all the machine work done. I'll need line boring with ARP's, bored, skimmed, honed etc, all the usual things. Has anyone got any good recommendations as to where I should take my custom? I want the job to be spot on, cost doesn't m...

[Mk2] [Turbo] South machine shops
I'm shortly going to be pulling my engine apart for a full rebuild so it's getting close to needing the machining work. I'm on the Isle of Wight and I'm no one here has the correct equipment to carry out the work. I'm going to need the block decked, head skimmed, line bored, cylinders bored and hone...

[Mk2] [Turbo] Standalone Ecu recommendations
I'm about to start my engine build for my 2 and wanted some opinions on decent standalone Ecu's. I was thinking about an emerald as my dad knows the guy who designed them so can get good discount. My main worry is if there are many people that can/will tune it. I want to be able to program the usual...

[Mk2] [Generic] Confusing swap situation
Hi all! Got a confusing situation. My car is an import Rev 3 NA. The engine it has is a Rev 2 turbo which is blown. I want to replace it with a rev 3 turbo lump but im not sure what i'd need to make it work where it has a rev 2 in a rev 3 as it is.. My initial thoughts on parts im going to need are ...

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Costs of 500hp
I was thinking about a k20 turbo swap but I think it'd be a lot more expensive to do unless I boosted it without rebuilding it which I wouldn't feel confident doing. I think I'll look into the costing of a k20 turbo more, I've always like those engines. I was also thinking of a 5s block but I've bee...

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Costs of 500hp
Ashley - from what you're saying, it's kind of tempting to go lower with compression as it'll make more power on boost, thus reaching my goal easier and cheaper. You're input you're input has been really useful so far, thank you! You say these engines don't respond well to ignition retarding. I've a...

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Costs of 500hp
Ashley - Thanks for the info, this is the sort of stuff I need to know and I appreciate the input! I'm not completely set on 9:1 but I'd like to have a decent amount of power off boost as well as on boost. I've also seen a few builds that use 9:1 that look to be successful. If I'm honest I'd like to...

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Costs of 500hp
Cheers for the info GTMatt :thumleft: £8k doesn't put me of at all, it just increases the original time scale I set. I will be buying what I can new, then maybe some bit second hand. I won't get second hand Pistons, rods, turbo, etc. I think I could cut the cost down to around £6500 as I have some s...

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Costs of 500hp
Thanks for the replies so far, I currently already have a standalone Ecu sat around gathering dust, boost controller, intercooler and/or charge cooler set ups laying around, brakes are upgraded already. That could cut out a good chunk of the price. Also I'm not shy about getting second hand parts if...

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Costs of 500hp
Mine was running 300 when it died and I admit it was a lot of fun. I just feel like I need more, I have a daily for work and back so it'll be nice to have an animal as a toy.

[Mk2] [Turbo] Costs of 500hp
So the rings in cylinder 4 on my Rev 2 tubby decided to let go on Saturday. The original plan for my car was to eventually build it for 500hp, looks like it's coming round sooner than expected. I wanted to get some kind of idea on what it's going to cost me to get 500hp reliably. I will use th...

Okay that makes sense, may get stalks at the same time as it might all have to come off anyways. Thanks Peter

Re: Power steering issue
Yeah mine also throws up a code as well.
Oh okay I never thought of that. My indicator stalks are pretty rubbish anyways, the indicators never stay on when I need them too so I'll be getting 2 birds with one stone if that's the case. Thanks alan2turbo

Re: Power steering issue
Mr2madlad, I've already tried that with the relay, I've also taken apart the black box to see if any water was in there. The relay is fine and so is the black box. I assume the power steering must need a speed signal so if the speedo is gone the power steering will go with it. I took the speedometer...

Power steering issue
I washed my 2 the other day and now my power steering and speedo are faulty. The power steering now only works for a minute or two from when the car is started. You can hear the pump running then it just dies. The speedo has just point blank stopped working. I've investigated the power steering issu...

Re: Dans First 2
Little update, got my new wheels on! :D Rears have gone on pretty easy, just had to remove the 5mm spacers and roll the arches. Still a small issue because of tyre size and spring wear though. My drivers side sits lower than my passenger side at the rear so the drivers side catches the wheel arch at...

Re: Backfire under load
Yeah it's not consistent, it might not even be backfiring as such, just sounds like it. It tends to do it when I've been driving off boost for a while then I put my boot down. It gets spooling then bangs once or twice hesitating when it bangs. Then all of a sudden it'll shoot off. I'll try get a dec...

Re: Backfire under load
Running 1.0 bar but it backfires before I reach full boost. I've had ignition parts replaced not long a go, maybe 5000 miles a go. Do they tend to go that quickly ?
