Re: Getting bored....

I'm now stripping my car as the engine went pop again, and I decided it wasnt worth paying for a another rebuild probably to pop again at some point in the future due to running high hp (wouldve been even higher had I gone for the rebuild again) All I can say is dont do it. I'm absolutely gutted str...

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Help indentifying rusty Part

My front left bar looks in similar condition as the photo above of the replaced unit. As for my right side, I've got a few similar looking support bars, and I'm not sure what 1 it is, it may have even gone off with other parts by mistake

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Rebuild options

bearings are cheap enough to replace i guess tho. Piston rings arent as bad as i thought either. I hear a lot of good things about total seal rings
cheers

Re: [Mk2] [Generic] The Truth about seals...

have to +1 for the washer spacer method, the ones I used were about 2mm thick, and has stopped literal floods of water appearing on the seats

[Mk2] [Turbo] Rebuild options

I need to change my block due to it cracking

It was fully forged, clevite bearings and arp bolts throughout. Can I swap all this into a new block, obviously after getting the bores correct for the pistons too.
Will the piston rings need redoing?
Also will all rev3 stuff go into a rev2 block?

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] head gasket failure - Update, cracked block

that's gutting that soon after mapping, I've had 2.5yrs since last mapping and about 4 since rebuild and overbore I've read so much about cracking thinking that'll never happen, expecting a crack to be a big noticable crack that you can see fresh air thru, not such a fine hair line that ours appear ...

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] head gasket failure - Update, cracked block

sorry, I meant the gasket lifted off with ease It also has the arp head stud kit installed from when the engine was last built. I dont think the head was skimmed last time, and fortunately it hasnt even got close to overheating in the 9yrs I've had the car, so fingers crossed it shouldnt have warped...

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] head gasket failure - Update, cracked block

it was almost covered in oil. I thought that part of the engine was supposed to be an oil free zone? The head didnt pull the gasket off when I removed it, and the gasket slid off the block, so I cant see how that pulled the layers apart. Only thing I can imagine is the realese of the tension when th...

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] head gasket failure - Update, cracked block

i've just found a few pages that agree with what you say.
I'll double check the gasket tonight. Does the separation of layers on the head gasket not necessarily mean failure?

I had a quick check of the bores, and it still looks perfect from it's prior re-bore, but i'll re-check again tonight

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Compression ratio's

so should I go for a 1.6mm gasket, what would that change the compression ration to? or, stick to the standard 0.8mm and not run as much boost? how much boost do you think will be safe with either scenario? am I right in thinking that with high compression, you dont need as much boost and get better...

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] head gasket failure - Update, cracked block

I'm concerned now u say that bob. The actual symptoms I was getting. 1st I noticed the water level dropping gradually. Then at idle just after startup it sounded slightly offbeat until it was revved Then after it went, I had lower compression on middle 2 cylinders @170psi and outer 2 @190psi. Bucket...

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] head gasket failure - Update, cracked block

so from the pics, it def looks like a failed gasket??

I'd point the blame at too much overboosting, especially at the moment of death it spiked to 2.0 bar when its only mapped for 1.5
