Re: Temperature dropping at highway speed

You'd be surprised how much coolant can flow through such a small hole Chris, but of course I'm not guaranteeing it's the problem. There is a line on the housing casting for alignment but failing that just get the valve at 12oc.

Re: Temperature dropping at highway speed

Did you make sure the thermostat was orientated properly with the casing? Otherwise the little bypass valve will let coolant flow which would be enough in the current temperatures for the temp to drop at higher speeds. Either that or the 'stat you put in was faulty which is not beyond the realms of ...

Re: MOT failed - advice needed.

Worst case just wire up a new button with a 12v feed direct to the horn, will get you through the MOT and then you can take it back out. Toyota can be surprisingly cheap for some things but IME are horribly expensive for stuff like ball joints - ie. >£100. Just look for known brands when buying part...

Re: MOT failed - advice needed.

Good result, all very easily fixed. The horns see a lot of corrosion but worst case is a few quid for an aftermarket one. Second point is, yes, drop link. If on a budget just get one from ebay. You'll likely need to grind the old one off. Ideally you should do the pair of fronts at the same time - m...

Re: Cambelt tensioner bolt - reverse thread?

Standard thread. The bolt itself is fairly beefy so if you can avoid rounding it you should be okay to give it bit more welly. If you're replacing the bearing anyway, stick some heat into it.

Also quite common for the cable to come off the matrix valve in the frunk, if the temp slider feels loose have a look at that.

Also, on the kiss principle, check it's not popped the EFI fuse in the fuse box you have photo'd (make sure you turn the car off before checking the fuses  ).

Re: mk1b turns over but wont start

Ghetto is a manual choke/waxstat removal - so you should have a button somewhere on your dash for that, but it wouldn't stop it firing up.

Assuming you don't have an immobiliser I would suspect an ignition fault - have a look at the king lead/dizzy cap/rotor arm.

Cheers,

Re: Cup oil filter wrench size?

TBF the filters say hand tight plus 3/4 turn.

Worst case stick a screwdriver through it but I've never had a filter I couldn't get off with the appropriate toolage.

If going the alloy pulley route then you really should get the whole rotating assembly (including the flywheel & clutch) balanced.

Re: Quick Q: Space saver wheel for Mk1 on MK3 roadster alloys.

I believe the originals are 185/60/14's, so the teardrop is 2mm larger rolling diameter than the roadster's (hence people use the mk3 roadster setup, it's virtually identical, so the speedo stays as inaccurate as ever). The profile is a % expression of the tyre width, so a 70 profile vs a 50 profile...

Re: Quick Q: Space saver wheel for Mk1 on MK3 roadster alloys.

The diameter (14", 15") doesn't matter at all, it's the overall rolling radius including the tyre which needs to be somewhere near the original, as long as it physically fits over the brake caliper. Typically space savers are a smaller diameter rim, but with a much larger profile tyre to m...

Re: 3S-GE BEAMS swap

The biggie for me is has anyone yet fitted a rev4 3SGTE? Higher comp ratio and generally a much nicer engine - especially for a midship install. I like the 2ZZ and the 3SGE beams but I'd agree with the basic premise that neither has the outright power to propel the relatively lardy mk1 to the 'decen...

Re: TO CUT A FLAP... OR NOT CUT A FLAP ??

I can't help with the measurements Jinxy, but I would go the cutting route if you are careful enough. IME aftermarket pumps just don't last like factory Toyota items so, even if you fix it this time, it might well need doing again in the lifetime of the car. IIRC you can drop the tank a couple of in...

Next stop given those symptoms would be the water temp sensor, assuming you've bled the coolant. You can measure the resistance to see if it's in spec.

Yeah I had to remove the TB and drill mine out. The usual choice is re-tap the holes and fit some allen key bolts or similar.

Red will be a mechanic having set it in the past, worth testing it before adjusting though, especially the plug & wires.
