Re: rev1 tubby TBAR - 56,000 miles!

Apart from the Speedo clocks, have you got any proof/paperwork to backup the 56,000 miles claim?

Re: max b.h.p. without forced induction?

Simpe fact is that traditional 4AGE engine tuning involves 300degree 9mm lift cams which push the RPM requirement so high, and the bottom end SO undriveable, that even on throttle bodies you have a medium-power grenade. Modern cams like Catcams are making which are 272/265 and 11.5/11mm lift intake/...

Second hand 4 branch - £200 Second hand cams - £300 Air filter - £25 Second hand ECU - no idea, doubt it was expensive Mapping - again unknown wouldnt have been more than £400 Bargains are great but they can't be had by everyone, also did the guy do all the fitting and mapping himself? Cap, arm, plug leads (less so on the leads though), drop links, oil filter.

More so on the early turbo though, since it has a non-return system in which keeps oil up the top of the engine...

Re: max b.h.p. without forced induction?

When raising the compresison, you'll speed up the burn, and hence require less timing which of course you can't modify yourself on the stock ECU. If I compare the figures I use for ignition timing from the Saxo (10.6:1) -VS- MR2 Mk1 (9.4:1) there is a DRAMATIC disparity. Peak power Peak timing on th...

Something doesn't look right in terms of the shape, but the 2 graphs cross (as they should) at 5250rpm!

Re: max b.h.p. without forced induction?

I've got Toms car at present and I've been road mapping it this evening with the wideband, it's all going fairly well and I'm just waiting for the 'inevitable' problem to happen!! For a 168,000 mile old engine, it's surprisingly youthful! Can really feel the crap cams, and rubbish compression ratio ...

Re: max b.h.p. without forced induction?

The Mk1 is so much more practical than an elise - getting in it is easy, it even has a boot! But yes, it's in a different league handling and poise-wise. At £6,000, you're desperately close to 2nd hand prices of 1997-1999 year Elises also!! Also, for £6,000 to only be making 8bhp more than the 5-val...

£6,000 for 170bhp N/A 4AGE? Oh my god what on earth did you buy? Something is truly amiss there, no wonder you were disappointed that's not good bang-for-bucks is it??

Re: max b.h.p. without forced induction?

.... in many ways a natural successor to the 4-AGE Yup that's why Toyota asked Yamaha to design them a replacement for the 4AGE and called it the 2ZZ-GE :) the conincidence is staggering  The only 2zz's I could find on Ebay were £1500 quid which is hardly the installed and running price in...

Re: max b.h.p. without forced induction?

Yeah, I've read that. It's all well and good but makes *ABSOLUTELY NO MENTION* about valve lift, and it's not possible to talk about cam duration without mentioning lift. andy EDIT: He mentions at 304 degrees the lift is 9.1mm. That's absolutely appauling. Was probably good 9 years ago, but modern c...

Re: max b.h.p. without forced induction?

I wonder if it wouldn't be fun to see who can get the most BHP out of a standard 4AGE engine on a budget of £1,000 (parts only). No NOS, No turbo, No supercharger. Labour, whatever you like. We can assume everyone already has a an exhaust of some description and a replacement air filter, but after t...

Re: max b.h.p. without forced induction?

Have a look at the "catcams" website... they have a wide range of cams, one I'm particularly interested in is the 7105140, loads of lift, the right amount duration it's a really exciting profile!! http://www.catcams.be/800x600/mainframe.htm?english that with the right breathing mods would ...

Re: max b.h.p. without forced induction?

I think a 170bhp 4AGE tuned engine would not only be a wonderful engine to drive, but it would keep the character of the car I love driving so much!! Some headwork to raise the compression, a steel head gasket, a pair of cams and some engine management, decent COLD air induction not just a hot-filte...

I know I'm opening myself up for yet another gang-attack from the engine-conversion boys, but this will be about the 5th thread I've read on this forum where a simple "what can I do with my 16v engine" has turned out to be a massive push for everyone to change their engines. any chance we ...

Re: Settle an argument for me please

Yes - the phraseology has improved, and now "back pressure" should not be used. It's important to differentiate. However, talking about 'tuned length'. Most of the aftermarket exhausts we are talking about will be the same 'length' as stock, so pulse tuning isn't affected by that. Furtherm...

Re: Settle an argument for me please

By changing the exhaust to a 'straight through' design, you are reducing back pressure. It take BHP to force the gases out, so if there is less back pressure you will reduce losses. This isn't "creating power" it's "reducing losses". That's the subtle difference. On the intake si...
