Re: MAJOR hesitation when cold.....

I've done so much work on this it's unreal; Cold start injector: Only operates for 5-6 seconds after start up. If you remove it the car really doesn't want to start, but once you get it going for a few secs it's fine. My conculsion - not that as hesitation can last for 10 minutes or more. AFM: Check...

Re: Hesitation when cold - think I've fixed it!

Done the coolant temp sensor, checked the AFM against another that's on a mates' car - both fine.

Can't be the lambda sensor, the engine doesn't use that till it's warm.

Can only think of;

Timing
Distributor
ECU
Blocked/weak injectors
Fuel Pump

Re: Killed the car. :(

The oil is 0w40 fully synth as recommended by Opie Oils. I change it more often than need be. The cam belt is worn away on the drivers' side - i.e. the side furthest from the engine. I don't know if there's any swarf collected as I could only get the top half off due to seized bolts - I'll know more...

Re: Hesitation when cold - think I've fixed it!

No. Nothing seems to shift it. The car still misfires now despite new; HT leads Dizzy cap Spark Plugs Rotor arm Coil Igniter Condesor (well, I'm calling it that - not even Toyota know what it is. Little grey box near the coil) The only things left to change are; ECU Distributor I'd be working on tho...

Re: smokey rev2 tubby

Cheers Ian. It's starting to look like a very big job. I don't run uprated boost (only 0.5 bar in fact) so I doubt it'll be at that much risk of piston rings or anything cracking but you never know.

Eek.

Looks like I'll be buying some better tools then...

Thanks for your help Ian.

Re: Quick one...

On mine I don't get any oil out. The idle drops to barely running and the car tries to stall. It runs fine if I rev it though.

Sounds different to yours... Now I need to find out why...

Ian, would the same comments apply to my car?

Cheers,

Quick one...

What happens if you guys take your oil filler caps off while the car is idling?

Anyone with a Rev 2 turbo fancy trying it for me?

Cheers,
Al.

Killed the car. :(

Aside from my (ever present) hesitation when cold and a couple of water-in-the-electrics problems this has been a very good car. I wasn't even slightly worried last weekend when I went for a driving meet to Wales. Checked all the levels before setting off and they were fine. Oil and fuel filters wer...

Re: Poorly Rev 2 Tubby

Got a graph to go with that?

That's SERIOUSLY ill. As they say on Top Gear - an entire Volkswagen Lupo has escaped from your engine!

If it's overfuelling you may need a new O2 sensor. Is there any smoke out of the back when you accellerate hard?

Re: Hesitation when cold - think I've fixed it!

I've put the new coil on and taken it for a run. The results are surprising to say the least. It's back to its old self. Misfiring and hesitating when cold! In a way this is a good thing (for you guys) as it saves you changing a coil pointlessly. I'm now thinking it's the igniters as they're the onl...

Re: Hesitation when cold - think I've fixed it!

*cough* Naming no names (I don't know what the local policy on naming & shaming is) but not everyone in that list has 100% of my faith either... I'll stick to doing my own. As Ben rightly says it's cheaper anyway! Coming back on topic - sat beside me is a big brown box, which I assume contains m...

Re: Hesitation when cold - think I've fixed it!

That's probably the ignition amplifier. Any other suggestions mate? The amplifier for these is housed inside the dizzy cap apparently. Also - this little grey thing isn't actually connected to the ignition coil, or even the fuel pump resistor heat sinks. It just seems to share a bracket becasue the...

Re: Hesitation when cold - think I've fixed it!

That's something I've been meaning to do since I got the thing. I'm going to end up buying a timing light aren't I? :(

I just don't trust mechanics - I've had so many disasters and dodgy work from so called 'professionals' on other cars that I don't want to let them near this one!

Re: Hesitation when cold - think I've fixed it!

Good luck with that.

If it's only in wet weather check the wiring that runs up to the bottom of the fuel pump resistor heat sinks. If the pump is struggling that'd be my number one target...

Re: Hesitation when cold - think I've fixed it!

Dan, The coil is from a place called Probe Distributors. They make blueprint parts (same idea as Camskill I guess?). The guy on the other end of the phone seemed to know a lot about the MR2 Turbo so that gave me faith in ordering from an otherwise unknown source. Check www.probedistributors.co.uk fo...

Re: Hesitation when cold - think I've fixed it!

T-vsv won't cause hesitation, besides - mine is working perfectly and it's rolling road results are fine. Mine hasn't hesitated once since I glued the coil shut. I've done over 300 miles in 4 days since I 'fixed' it. It didn't totally cure the engines' wierd runing (flatspots, misfire and wet-weathe...
