Well it turned out to be the most basic of problems a dud battery. Was on Ebay this evening and did a search for MR2 MK1 and up popped 1908 items click the tab for "auctions only" and the number of available items dropped to just 43.

What is the point of an auction site if everything on it is "Buy it now" at inflated prices.

Little bit of an update, after humming and hawing on what I should do, came to the conclusion that I need to run the thing to find out if there was a genuine problem with the HG or not. Toyota published an accident repair manual for the MR2, I happen to have one , and there are lots of dimensioned diagrams of the body shell in it. Someone may have a scan of it that they could pass on for you.

How old is your water pump? Always worth considering doing that too whilst everything is in bits. Changed the pump and some rotten pipework only last year so should be good.
