Just fitted a new alternator to mine yesterday and I found lining the lower pivot bolt up was easier from underneath the car using a small scredriver in the whole first wiggle it about until it feels loose then try sliding the bolt through. Thanks for all the advice guys, sadly going to have to put off looking at this now for a week or so as now have 2 cracked ribs so just going to be too painful to crawl round on the floor checking earths and removing old alternator. I can vouch for this car as I sold it to Rich, one of the most solid examples i've seen and by the look of it Rich has looked after it well since my ownership.
