IMOC's new Server Now Online

Folks, In the next couple of weeks we're going to be migrating the IMOC site across to a new Hosting provider and server, funded by your support. Whilst this is happening, at times you may find the site running slowly or after 10pm at night briefly offline whilst we take backups and move content to ...

Re: Front brake refresh ... glazed inner disk surface ?

Looks to me more like you have a seized caliper so its not applying any pressure to the inner pad. Without regular contact with the pad the surface of the disk has just corroded up. Id be taking a good look at the calipers and slider pins .. apart from the inner pad had worn down more than the oute...

Re: Replacement windscreens

Yes, I had a few in my old Mk2 GT. All had to come from Toyota ( cost ~5 years ago was £500ish ! ) so they were the correct tint and contained the AM aerial.

One without the aerial was a lot cheaper ISTR around £200.

Re: Car coughing spluttering until warmed up - ignitor?

Does sound almost certainly HT related given it runs badly in the wet. Can you swap the HT bits and igniter over with another owner near you? You sure the dizzy cap is a genuine Toyota one? Old Blueprint parts sometimes used to give flatspots. Also - you checked the condition of the plugs and inside...

Re: Hard to get into third gear sometimes

One other thought - the driveshaft oil seals are known to leak and you slowly loose your gearbox oil, which would cause difficult shifts. Would be worth just checking the level of the oil in the gearbox ( take off nut on the side, stick your finger through and check there's oil at that level and if ...

Re: Running lumpy after thermostat replacement

Its been a long, long time since I did my Mk2 Rad but I'm fairly sure you can get it out without taking the front bumper off. Replacement - have to say I'd get one from MrT. A radiator isn't something I'd like to fit a pattern part for. One other tip - the coolant bleed taps at the top of the rad al...

Re: steering wheel wobble

It's a 2002 model and yes it does have different wheels with spacers. 4 Wheel geo alignment carried out by a motor sport company. I've checked the tyre pressure and it's a little high, so will alter this. I'll be changing n/s front wheel hub as the bearings seem a little dry. I'll be changing front...

Re: steering wheel wobble

Are you using the toyota alloys or something else?

If other alloys, do you have any hub-centric spacers for the alloys?

FWIW, I'd also get wheels balanced at a trusted specialist. Your average ATS / Kwick Fit are hopeless, I had no end of trouble in a Mk2 MK2.

Re: Front brake refresh ... glazed inner disk surface ?

It was only 12-18 months old. The outer face looks absolutely fine, which was why I was so surprised at the state of the inside surface of the brake disk. I don't think the disk material / quality was a problem here - the last set from the same supplier didn't have this problem, and I've used patter...

Re: Front brake refresh ... glazed inner disk surface ?

I bet they feel a bit better now, eh? ;) That plus some new DOT5.1 brake fluid and they're feeling good again. Much more stopping power for much less brake pedal pressure. Much as MrT's pads are great all rounders for road and light track use, it does make me wonder about trying other pad materials.

Are they pattern discs?

Yes, Mr T pads and my local motor factor's pattern disks - have been fine in the past. I've had a previous set end up with some fairly heavy scoring ( as Dan describes ) but nothing as bad as this.

Front brake refresh ... glazed inner disk surface ?

A few weeks back, I was getting a little steering vibration under heavy braking which I put down to warped disks. Given a set of Pattern disks + Toyota Pads is just over £100, I decided to replace the lot - the brakes last time I did that were great afterwards. Looking at the outside of the disks, e...

Re: changing headgasket

FWIW, I've done a HG twice on a my trackday MK1 - I'd definitely recommend getting the Toyota set. ( see http://www.imoc.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=50924 ) The first time I used a cheap gasket kit ( about £50 all in - branded FAI ) and the HG went again after nine months. Pulling it all apart the ...

Re: Server Disk Failed : Site Slow/ phpBB Critical Errors - 3,4 July

Server is back to normal now, so 81 seconds is excessive. Normally, I find pages take under 1 second to generate ( eg this one took 0.14s ) and most pages should be under 2-3 seconds apart from peak times ( Lunchtime, early evening ). If you're regularly seeing load times of more than 10 seconds, ca...

I suspect some crud / grot too. Try removing the sensor from the hubs, and using some brake cleaner to clean the sensor and wash out the inside of the rings.

Re: In-car camera mount... Who uses what???

I've used a B-Hague sourced suction mount for many years ( see http://www.b-hague.co.uk/camera_suction_pads_vacuum_mounts.htm, SM1 ) , with an external bullet cam and a camcorder inside the car. So long as that is tethered too the marshals have been happy with it on the outside of the car - they're ...

Re: More problems!

With the speedhut dials - did you remove and then refit the speedo needle?

If so, it sounds like its position wasn't held until you refitted the needle, giving you the 60mph offset.

Re: Disc Protectors / Guards

I'm fairly sure when I did my MK1a to 1b front brake conversion, I just cut them off - had no problems with grit / stones getting stuck in against the pads.
