Re: MPG!...

Well this thread gives me some hope of not having to get a second mortgage. I am drivin my 2 on a banger rally in sept from st omer to prague and then home about 3000 miles in all. This assumes i get it all back together and working in time!! I was calculating costs based on 25mpg so if i can get 30...

Had this problem on an old 316 bmw and a saab 9000, both times cleaning the IAC with throttle body cleaner worked a treat.

Re: compression test procedure ?

I usually do a compression test with wide open throttle Also oil up the sealing oring on the tester as this will help get a good seal and helps removal. Ideally you would also want the engine up to running temp. Make sure your battery is 100% charged as you want all cylinder tests done at the same c...

IIRC the squirters are attached with 5mm hex bit heads but it could have been 6mm.

Re: [Mk2] [Generic] valve spring compressor tool?

Hi there as the valve springs are recessed a little you need a compressor with an adjustable or longer collar end. I bought this one thinking it would be long enough but the collar end was too short!!! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VALVE-SPRING-COMPRESSOR-10-OHC-OHV-CVH-ENGINES-NEW-/370449638431?pt=UK_Hand_...

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Sodding crankshaft pulley!

The 2 bolt method may work but it relies on tightening each side bolt alternately which will pull the pulley at a slight angle each time you tighten, and as such will wedge the pulley on the shaft then unwedge then wedge as you alternate. Now this could slightly deform the pulley or the key. At most...

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Sodding crankshaft pulley!

Cheers for that dude, im sure i can find a few bits knocking about to make one of them up. So are the 4 holes in the pulley actually threaded then? 2 of them (diametrically opposite) will be but they may need chasing out first. If you don't have a M8 tap or chase then you can make one by cutting a ...

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Sodding crankshaft pulley!

I am assuming you have the pulley bolt undone. Have you got any metalworking tools? you could fab up something like this (picture of Swin's handy work) http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w54/swin190/DSC00010.jpg You could make it a bit simpler using M8 threaded bar and a few M8 nuts and some flat ba...

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] no oil pressure HELP please !

could be the pick up to block not sealing so sucking in air, ive seen this on an engine. Also are you sure the HG is on the right way around as i think one end has an extra hole for one of the oilways.

[Mk2] [Generic] Main Bearing size?? Engine builders help pls

Hi people I have come across another prob with refreshing my engine. It is currently out on a stand and fairly stripped, just crank and pistons and oil pump left on the block. After visually inspecting the bearings (con rod and main) i found the main nearest the flywheel end (#5) is worn to the copp...
