Re: Mk2 Rev2 Tubby Needs TLC £950
Book the car in for an MOT, drive straight to MOT station and you are legal to drive minus an MOT. Trade plates cover you for not having the tax. Job done. trade plates cover mot and tax iirc? Besides the point though, is the car still for sale at all? Cheers, Alex Trade plate do not make a car road...

Re: fitting sump
I have recently replaced the sump on my N/A SW20. Yes you will have to remove the exhaust downpipe - 3 bolts hold it to the manifold end and another 2 to the rear silencer. I also had to remove a gearbox mounting bracket to get to one of the 10mm bolts that was tucked up behind it. A bit difficult t...

Re: Bit of a race me V motorbike
I guess because I own both an MR2 and Ducati 748 I should be able to cast an opinion. I would feel pretty confident, particularly in the slower speed twisty stuff that I could keep most people on a bike behind me if I was driving the MR2. I say most people because, as has already been said on this t...

Re: [Mk2 Turbo] Cheating MOT
I'm not entirely sure ABS is tested in an MOT anyway. If an error bulb is lit and the tester notices it, I don't know if this is a fail or not?

Re: Acceleration problems, please help a newbie!!
Sounds exactly like my car was behaving when the mechanical (i.e. valve position to piston top-dead centre) position was not set up correctly. Has the car recently had a new cambelt installed?

Re: Alternator compatiblity 3S-GE - 3S-GTE..
I have retrofitted a turbo alternator to a n/a. Involved rather a lot of filing in order to get it to fit to the mounting bracket and was a pain in the ***. I would look for a specific n/a unit

Re: is it the alternator??
I think at 1992 yours is right on the change so could be either. Mine is a 1992 (manufactured 10/92) and is round type. Quite easy to look - just get on the floor behind the car and with a torch look up towards the right hand end of the car (drivers side). You may have to pull the plug off which wil...

Re: is it the alternator??
Sounds like the alternator. Breaker prices seem to be around the 30-45 quid mark. Check your alternator connection as I believe there are a couple of connector styles (round and oval shape). I just bought a recon one through Toyota Celica Breakers in Cornwall: http://www.tcbparts.co.uk/ Cost 100 qui...

Re: Technical question about cambelt tensioners
Cheers Steve. I have just read the Toyota Manual CD and I think my tensioner is duff. The pin retracts if I push it against a wall and according to the manual, it should take more effort than that.
Looks like my wallet is going to be loosened by £45 then!

Technical question about cambelt tensioners
Hi all, Not the most inspiring topic but I have a question about cambelt tensioners on a Mk2 MR2 3S/GE engine. The tensioner is a spring type, not a hydraulic one. Basically, I am having problems with my recent new cambelt install. The belt seems very slack between the two cam pullies and also betwe...

Re: New (old) owner of 1992 N/A with snapped cambelt
Well the oil and water leak are now cured. Turns out the garage who looked at the car and advised (wrongly) that the valves would be bent took the rocker cover off and put it back on trapping the connector for no.1 injector - so a half inch gap between the head and rocker cover and no injection to n...

Hi Pants2,
Not wanting to jump a queue but is the engine still for sale? I may be after a new one after mine has developed a nasty leak. I notice you live in Corsham. I work on Hartham Park so am very close!
Cheers

Re: New (old) owner of 1992 N/A with snapped cambelt
Quick update - I installed a new belt today (pig of a job), started the car up (reluctant to start but finally got going) and sounds like it is running on 3. But the biggest problem seems to be oil and water gushing out of the engine somewhere! (i think it is the front of the engine i.e. the side fa...

Could they possibly mean the bearing shells (big ends) have gone. Can make this sound when letting revs drop to idle.

Hmmm....checking the link you forwarded Idavies83, for every person saying it is an interference engine there is someone else saying non-interference. Arghhh!!!!!

New (old) owner of 1992 N/A with snapped cambelt
Hi all, I have just purchased a 1992 MR2 n/a (this is my 4th now) with a snapped belt. IIRC the 3s-GE engine is non-interference yet my friendly mechanics Technical Databook for Ignition Timing claims the engine is an interference one. Can anyone confirm either way. BTW the last owner had a garage r...

Had exactly the same problem on mine with the warning lights staying on. Alternator had seized. Worth checking yours to see if it is still working
