Sticky throttle & wipers

Hi, Been away from these boards for a while but i've been using my car a lot more recently and am starting to note a few things which i would like to sort out. One is the sticky feeling throttle that is has had since i bought it 6 years ago. Makes it difficult to moderate in traffic. I did adjust th...

Re: MR2 as daily hack exeeding limited ins milage dilema

I would go cheap diesel daily hack and MR2 for weekends/evenings. If you pay the 1200 then will it reduce next year? Also, although MR2's are reliable it is an old car now. May be better and more comfortable with a newer, cheap diesel for the daily grind? Maybe use the MR2 one day a week or the odd ...

My guess advertise for say 1795 and expect 1500.

Keep it as you will only regret selling it!

Thanks for the comprehensive reply Paul.

I am on holiday soon so may have to wait until I'm back but will definately have a look.

Re: my car 'coughs' when starting....

When you crank the engine and let go of the key the bulb should instantly go out or meter should read 0v, if it doesn't then the starter is fine and it is either the relay or ignition switch. If the voltage does drop to zero immediately after letting go of the key then the starter is 100% to blame....

Re: my car 'coughs' when starting....

Right, tried it a couple of mornings now and a bit of accelerator helps but still have the engine labouring for the few seconds on first start up. Perhaps it's a fuel issue, bit of damp, minor electrical problem or starter? Who knows? Same as my car refusing to idle when I have done a long journey e...

Re: my car 'coughs' when starting....

Tried a bit more 'gas' when starting and it revs easily enough but need to try again to be sure. I do think it helps. Will take the advice on leaving ignition on for a few seconds and report back later today. Cheers.

Re: my car 'coughs' when starting....

Tried giving the car a little bit of 'gas' this morning as i started it and it didn't cough once. Only have the one chance to try each morning as this is only when it occurs but i will try again tomorrow and feed back. If it happens again then i am pretty sure it is a fuel delivery type problem but ...

Re: my car 'coughs' when starting....

I'm sorry to say the same thing over again but I've looked at your video over and over and that is the exact sound that mine does and that is the sound of a stuck in starter that drops out again after a few seconds. I bet your revs are held down until the noise stops and the engine picks up when th...

I agree. Don't think the valve clearances causes my 'coughing' noise.

My mk2 na does this as well and I have yet to figure it out, even changed whole ignition system from ignitor inwards, new fuel filter and pump :( At least I'm not on my own. :D As these cars have been around for a while now I was sure someone would have had this problem and worked out what it was b...

The timing was checked when the cap was changed and is fine. The car runs fine, just this initial noise and spluttering when first started.

Re: my car 'coughs' when starting....

It doesn't make a whine. It's more of a spluttering noise that lasts for a few seconds and only first time it is started. You may be right but I've always thought most likely a fuel issue? Perhaps someone else may be able to comment as I can't imagine this hasn't happened before?

Re: my car 'coughs' when starting....

Does it do it if you give it some gas before starting, sounds like its just struggling a bit before the choke kicks in. Wouldnt have thought it was the cold injector as mines been disconnected for years and it made no difference at all. Thanks for the response. I think you're right that it is a fue...

my car 'coughs' when starting....

As above really. When i first start my mk1 whatever the time of day or weather it seems to 'miss' or 'cough' for a few seconds before settling down to even running thereafter. When the car is started later the same day there is no problem. It doesn't cause me any real problems but i would like to ge...
