Thanks for everyones help so far. The alternator is replaced and a week with an auto electrician has revealed a ecu wiring fault tripping something at about 4500 rpm. So that's the good news, bad news is it still runs like crap. Really low on power particularly at low revs, also sounds rough as hell...

I can confirm that it is just 2 bolts, having just removed an alternator. Be aware that the bottom bolt runs right through the alternator case, so you must fully extract this i.e. only taking the nut off the end isn't enough. The answers to everyones questions are as follows: - The car v.meter shows voltage in normal range. - Battery removed and resistance check does indeed show v.low resistance, but removing every fuse makes no difference. - Battery back in and running, volt meter reads 14....
