Tune a 4a-ge, surely you're completely mental and should be locked up.
Only joking.
I eagerly await your updates Paul.

Re: Headroom improvements?
Mk1a seats sit a little lower than those in the mk1b. You could try retrofitting a pair of earlier seats.

Re: Grinding noise when turning right
Worth having a look at the bearings. Nothing too challenging. Jack the rear up, hand brake on, in gear, rear wheels off, split pin and washer off, then you'll need a deep 30mm socket on a big breaker bar. Slacken the hub nut off then give it a good nip up (to the correct torque if you have a torque ...

White over Silver Mk1 in Ellesmere, Shropshire.
Anyone on here? My wife spotted a white over silver mk1 when she was working in Ellesmere last week. I was up that way and saw it twice today.
Anyone on here?

I find it much easier to put oil into the box through the reverse switch hole.

It's usually possible to get both sides equal.
It might be worth having a look at your bushes, top mounts, ball joints and suspension links just to check that everything is true.

Re: whining, high speed, motor type spinning noise on cold startup
Is this noise before the engine starts to turn over or after the engine has started? It sounds to me like the starter motor gear is not fully engaging or disengaging with the flywheel ring gear. This can occur due to a build up of dirt in the 'gearbox' of the starter motor. It may be worth dropping ...

Re: normal temperature needle reading on gauge?
Most modern dash temp sensors are biased to give a stable reading around the middle of the gauge rather than an actual temp reading. The VAG temp gauge for the 1.8T shows the same reading (middle) on the gauge between something like 70 and 100 degrees, they show cold below and hot above. I guess it'...

I didn't fit the belt but I'm not trying to shift the blame into the person who did.
I just checked the cams and they are not seized so at least they are ok.
Well that's my question answered!

Re: Cambelt snapped
Was the low oil pressure ever resolved? Did you keep it running with the tappy top end? I've heard of cams ceasing / going tight causing belts to snap. I would have thought that the crank bearings would go before the cam with low oil pressure though. Have you had a look under the cambelt cover yet? ...

The box of gears is finished.
I collected the gearbox from Elite yesterday. It is now in pride of place in the kitchen. http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h104/paulkay2/Six%20speeds/6A08CE6E-2CD0-4CE7-A341-AE3C8C9B6102_zpsyj391rfw.jpg Speed graphs. http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h104/paulkay2/Six%20speeds/D9310344-6450-4C19-A4...

Re: car will not start
I've suffered with knackered jump leads recently (they don't seem to like getting hot). I struggled to get my tractor going for hours using jump leads off cars or fully charged batteries with no luck. I then decided to get out the spanners and swap a decent battery in, started first push of the star...
