Re: Spongy Pedal and Poor Brakes

Well done Phil, now the brakes are right you can come to Tatton at the end of May, my car is going back on the road on the 1st April, I can't wait :thumleft: 'Fraid the car goes to its new home in the next week or two. A good friend is looking after her so I promised to get the brakes (and a few ot...

Re: Spongy Pedal and Poor Brakes

Quick update - the car is sorted!!! \:D/ Needed bleeding 3 full times with the engine running to sort it. Amazed that I'd bled it already (3 times on each caliper) without the engine running and when I tried the first time with the engine the amount of air that came out of the rear calipers was incr...

Re: Spongy Pedal and Poor Brakes

Apologies if this is teaching you to suck eggs....I'm not sure how you are carrying out your bleeding, but are you closing off the bleed nipple after every down press on the pedal? This is the only 100% successful way I've found of doing this. Open nipple, press pedal down, close nipple, release pe...

Re: Spongy Pedal and Poor Brakes

I've just finished a major brake overhaul on a customers mk1; New discs + pads all round, Calipers stripped, painted and rebuilt with new seals all over, Goodridge Stainless Braided Hoses, New DOT4 Brake Fluid. After the second bleed I was severely disappointed with the feel of the brakes...so bled...

Re: Spongy Pedal and Poor Brakes

When bleeding start off with the brake nearest the servo and then work your way around, doing the furthest away last. Erm... No. Always furthest fromthe master cylinder 1st and work to the nearest :thumleft: If you are genuinely concerned about air still being trapped in the system, find something ...

Thanks Mart - Will do some more investigating.....

Re: Spongy Pedal and Poor Brakes

One thing that is weird is the pedal pumps up solid when the car is stationary and switched off yet the pedal travel is much greater when the car is running - maybe the vacuum to the servo is an issue??? Err, no - that's normal. Without the engine running, you don't have servo assistance with the b...

Re: Spongy Pedal and Poor Brakes

OK, I've spent a fair few hours on the brakes. Replaced all the pads (front and rear) and also freed up the slider pins which were a little stiff on a couple of the calipers. Took car out and there's still excessive travel in the brake pedal and the spongy feel and poor braking is still there :( Nex...

Re: Spongy Pedal and Poor Brakes

Keep at it, if you have drained the oil there will be alot of trapped air in the system. I had to do it more times then I care to count when I did mine. Also check and grease all the sliders etc. What state are the calipers in? Pads can go off, I had this on 1 side. Calipers seem fine - handbrake i...

The original coating is a zinc based. I'm not sure there's anything that can be sprayed on although Frost do this kit....

Spongy Pedal and Poor Brakes

I've just finished draining\replacing the brake fluid for some fresh Motul RBF600 in the hope that it might improve the spongy pedal and overall poor brakes. I've bled the system 3 times (with the help of a mate pressing the pedal!) and the pedal feels firm when pumped up but when driving the pedal ...

Re: A Fond Farewell!

What about a DC5? 8) Or are the chassis not as good as the DC2? I really like the DC5 (I've driven a couple) but most are tax band G and when you add that to a car that's *really* expensive to insure (even for an old fart like me!) it's just not worth the premium for the kind of mileage I do. I mig...

Re: A Fond Farewell!

hmm, maybe have a go in an elise as well if you like the small type of car the mk1 is. As you already know the DC2 etc. The elise will feel very planted too. I've tried the Elise and at over 6ft tall I find getting in and out of them quite difficult - nicely balanced and go-kart-like handling thoug...

Re: A Fond Farewell!

My previous 'second car' was a Honda NSX and before that I had a very nice DC2 Integra so I guess the MR2 was always going to have a hard act to follow! I'm probably leaning towards the S2000 at the moment but will make a decision in the New Year. I have driven a couple and really liked them.... alt...

Re: A Fond Farewell!

Cheers Dave - Will still be going to the Tatton Show next year so will call over and say "hello" - I think the Mk1 stand should have won the 'least beardy and most welcoming' award!!! Not sure what to go for next... another DC2 Integra would be nice but there's very few with sensible...

A Fond Farewell!

Just wanted to say a quick "thanks and goodbye". It's been a short stay (since April!) but I have to accept that Mk1 ownership isn't really for me! Having been spoilt with some of Honda's finest high-revving cars I'm just not getting the same grin-factor with the 'two' so it's time to move...

Oh, I spotted this....

Image

It's a REAL Ferrari 355. I asked the owner if he was going to buy a body kit and convert it into a Mk2 MR2?
