Light hearted debate - no more! :) I have driven my car hard at night - stopped the car and looked at the turbo - and - as you said in an earlier post - its hot - mine was glowing cherry red - thats hot!! - I dont think I'd be happy to rely on (non circulating) water (boiling point of 100 degress at...

I could put an anemometer inside the engine bay. I could put an anemometer on top of the engine lid I could also put temperature probes in the engine bay, and on the deck lid I could wire in microphones internally and externally just to listen to wind rush I could include GPS measuring devices to ch...

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] engine fan wiring can i do this? wot have you done/

As for cooling the turbo - Our cars do not actually need a turbo timer or extra cooling! The water cooled design was created to prevent the need for a shut-down cool-off period as the water jacket keeps the temps acceptable. The turbo will also be at its coolest while driving in traffic as its not ...

Im happy with my test - it stands as far as Im concerned - at anything under 80 mph the fans are pulling air througth then engine bay more effectively then the car can do on its own. Another interesting observation is that when driving in the rain - with the fans on - keeps the engine lid dry as the...

Heres an easy test I tried :) Tie some ribbons to the outlet grills on the engine lid. Turn on the fans - watch the ribbons stand up and dance in the airflow. Switch off the fans - go find a motorway - open up the car - watch the ribbons in the mirror. It isnt till the car gets to 80mph that the rib...

The steel sump is misleading - they both have steel sump pans - with the Rev 3 having a two piece sump with an alloy top halve. Best way to tell the blocks apart is the position of the oil filter On rev 1 - 2 its on the front of the engine block at the top (you get at it from the top of the car) On ...

Re: [Mk2] [Generic] Cambelt Timing Marks - a sticky???

Isn't this what TDC marks are for? TDC the crank and cams and ensure that they are all still TDC when all back together. :-k Very true - but if you have a marked up cam belt you can line up the marks on the belt with the marks on the engine - with a greater chance of getting it right when the tensi...

[Mk2] [Generic] Cambelt Timing Marks - a sticky???

Changing the cambelt would be a lot easier if the replacement units had marks on to line up with the marks on the crank and cambelt pulleys. If you are replacing an existing belt you can put the marks on to the belt (using tipex etc) and transfer them to the new one... I forgot!! It would be REALLY ...

A broken inlet valve has made a small mark in the crown of piston 4 ( I have removed the head and got a replacement unit). Its a small mark but if I dont replace it I wont ever trust the motor again, The piston set is pretty new (there isnt even any carbon on them) so I dont want to replace the lot ...

Zero Benefit. Putting all else aside it would be almost impossible to get any cooling air to the turbo..... The stock car has an air scoop under the car to direct cool air into the engine bay over the exhaust pipes and around the Turbo - without the scoop the exhaust can get VERY hot. Ive seen the p...

Go to B&Q - they do a range of spray paints called Plasi-Kote. Buy one can of primer and one can of you desired colour.... This stuff works great. I have painted calipers on a range of cars using this stuff - from Bright red to Fluorescent orange (which needs a base coat of white). It works, it ...

Using a high quality fuel such as BP Ultimate for a few tanks before the MOT will also help to significantly reduce emissions ;)

[Mk2] [Turbo] Rev5 engine differences?

Hi Guys I have just finished fitting a Rev5 motor to my Rev3 - along with a reconditioned turbo. Im pleased with the results I have to say. But I had a nagging doubt about the big end bearings so I dropped of the sump and inspected them. As it happens they are in perfect condition, in fact the whole...
