Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Rebuild finished, engine fitted and......at last on the road!!

After ordering the GM sensor yesterday, I took the s'hand one off the car and gave it a good clean and re-tried everything. Joy of joys! it started after just a two second turn of the key, fast idled at about 1500rpm then settled down to about 900rpm. It did throw up the engine management light and ...

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Rebuild finished, engine fitted and......at last on the road!!

I spent a bit of time on the valve clearances during the build, made sure they were all within spec. ( I think one was 0.02mm under and one was a similar amount over). Did the continuity check last night and the wiring between ECU connector and knock sensor connector is sound. Looks like a GM sensor...

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] knock sensor or ecu ?

Sorry to revive an old thread but it looks like I'm having the same sort of grief. So two questions,

1. Did the GM knock sensor cure all your problems?

2, Have you had it on a while and are you happy with it at the mo?

Cheers,

Not sure about the MR2 piston dia. but I measured the pistons on a set of iS200 calipers last night and they are 44.5mm.

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Rebuild finished, engine fitted and......at last on the road!!

I tried the continuity test last night but had no luck. The BGB guide says the knock sensor goes to a pin no.5 of a 16 pin ECU connector (a black wire). On my rev.2 that pin is a blue wire. I believe the BGB guide info is for a rev.1 ECU. Does anyone have info as to what connector and pin number the...

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] rev2 turbo mapping 89661-17380 ECU

Sorry to do a bit of thread hi-jacking but what connector / pin from the ecu is directly conncted to the knock sensor.
I've checked the BGB guides but it appears they are for a rev.1 engine.

Any help appreciated,

JB.

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Engine management light coming on

Have a look on here: www.mr2-tech.com/bgb/mechanical/volume1/efi_system This give a very good run down of what's involved and the cars method of logging the fault codes. Have a read, do what it says and get back on here with the error code. In fact put the following web address in your favourites ww...

Anyone know which connector and corresponding pin to the ECU I need to be checking?
I'm not the best at circuit diagrams and stuff to do with wires!

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Rebuild finished, engine fitted and......at last on the road!!

Well I received my distributor and knock sensor via the mail on thursday. Put everything back together and tried to start the engine - now at this point I was certain everything must be OK and it would burst into life and purr like a kitten. Flicked the key and it wasn't keen to go. After swinging t...

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Should I Try a DIY engine and more overhaul??

Sounds like you really want to give this a go! As has been said it isn't a cheap way to go. The engine comes out of the bottom with the gearbox attached and you can drop it down just using two trolley jacks - you're better off using a hoist to get it back in though. There's no doubt a stripdown and ...

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Rebuild finished, engine fitted and......at last on the road!!

Thanks for all the replies. I've ordered a s/hand distributor and knock sensor from James at 3S. I hope it arrives soon and all goes according to plan. It was a heart dropping moment when it wouldn't run, you begin to question all the time, money and effort that's gone on. Can't wait to get it going...

One last question.

Does the Lexus caliper fit over the std. discs and allow the std. Toyota 15" wheel to be fitted without any clearance problems??

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Cracked radiator pipe

Yep, just done this on mine. It went just where a bracket is brazed on to it to hold it to the bulk head. You'll have to remove the smaller heat shield in front of the engine to get at it. On mine the water was dripping down the length of the pipe and puddling on the floor towards the front of the c...

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Rebuild finished, engine fitted and......at last on the road!!

A few more things. After running roughly in the condition described that's when I got the number 12 and 52 error codes. The knock sensor got damaged during my rebuild so I know I need a new one. Will it run really bad with a knackered knock sensor? First job when I get back is to fit a s/h dizzy and...

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Rebuild finished, engine fitted and......at last on the road!!

Thanks for the replies guys. OK now for the next stage. I originally had the dizzy 180degs out and it wasn't starting at all. I removed it and reset it only to find that the body that extends into the head had snapped. The slot that drives everything is still OK and engages in the inlet cam OK. I di...

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Lexus IS300 brake calipers

My wife has an is200 which I've always considered to have excellent brakes. I bought a set of Lexus iS200 calipers about a year ago thinking they'd be great on the MR2. Unfortunately I've not had the time to mess around with nthem. Do you know if the 200's and 300's use the same calipers?? Also what...

[Mk2] [Turbo] Rebuild finished, engine fitted and......at last on the road!!

Well after spending far too much time and money my engine rebuild is now complete. Unfortunately it isn't the joyous occasion I imagined. Took ages to start the car and after loads of messing around it's running as rough as hell. An error check is showing code 12 and code 52. Now I can understand th...

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Turbo fitting costs

In saying that, I would not hesitate in doing it again. Part of the fun in these cars is learning how they work and the BGB is very good reference. Couldn't agree more. When I first had mine I thought working and maintenance would be a nightmare. The simplest of jobs proved this to be true. I've ju...

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Water Leak Means Fuel Tank Has To Come Out?

Seems to be quite common then. I did exactly the same thing after dropping my fuel tank to fit a Walbro pump. When it went back it caught the brass pipe and split it by a bulkhead fitting bracket. My engine was out at the time so it wasn't too bad. Ended up cutting out the damaged section and replac...

Re: [All] [Turbo] CCTV Garages???

For the record Aldi (don't laugh!) occasionally have CCTV type products at really good prices. Recently they had a colour CCTV set up that needed wiring in for about £25. Also there's a colour baby monitor device that sends sound and pictures to a receiver unit in some stores now. At the end of the ...
