Re: Saw this Mk1 For Sale

I 'thought' I liked the blue interiors when these cars were new in the showroom. But this was based on a casual glance through the windows. I had a dark blue mk1b for a while with this blue interior and to truly hate the interior you really have to own and drive the car for a while. Sitting in the p...

Re: Idle control problem - help needed

Hi Paul I don't have any 4AGE stuff here to look at any more so I can only go on my memory. But I still don't recall the UK 4AGE ECU having a stoplight input pin. Are you sure you are looking at the UK 4AGE wiring? It definitely does have an ECU output pin that connects to the idle up VSV and the EC...

Re: Idle control problem - help needed

The UK mk1 ECUs also have an auxilliary 'idle up' control written into the program code that achieves idle up through adding controlled bursts of ignition timing advance. This must have been added by concerned Toyota/Denso engineers when the development TCCS kept stalling at junctions if there was a...

Re: Idle control problem - help needed

Don't take this as gospel but I thought the idle up valve had multiple inputs from the wiring harness. Each via a diode so if you turn on the heater fan or the lights or press the brakes the idle up will be enabled via the respective diode connection. It also has a control line from the ECU and from...

Re: Idle control problem - help needed

I've only just found out recently that when you come to a stop and put your foot on the brake, the revs increase which is perfectly normal. Electrical activity will increase the revs, i'm assuming that happens with the superchargers as well as the n/as Always thought the revs increase as a result o...

Re: 1985 Restored Red Mk1a MR2 (now with pics)

If you think about it how is a Uk Na MAP sensor going to see boost when all it ever sees is vacuum? What mapping is there inside a UK na ECU for boost even if the MAP could register positive pressure? Using the USDM AFM means the air going into the turbo is metered and fuel allowed for regardless o...

Re: Premium Fuels

Of the various UK mk1 MR2s the early mk1a has an ECU that has much more ignition advance at high rpm/load compared to the ECU in the later 1989 mk1b. i.e. several degrees more advance in the main ignition map! So I suppose the mk1a would be the one that could 'maybe' benefit from higher octance fuel...

Re: Which petrol??

The other thing to watch out for is that the ECU also adds about 3 degrees of ignition advance when the TVIS kicks in (after a tiny time delay). However, the ECU has a kind of hysteresis on the TVIS so for example on a mk1a if you exceed 4350rpm the TVIS kicks in and you get a 3 degree step in timin...

Re: Which petrol??

Just to complicate things even further, the ignition timing map is more advanced on a mk1a at high rpm/load. This is the 'little' ECU 89661-17030. So if I had a mk1a I'd be tempted to run the higher RON fuel. My late 1989 red mk1b seems to show little preference for either fuel but when I had a seco...

Re: MR2 dB noise level

Somebody somewhere will have a mint mk1 MR2 that still has the original exhaust on it.

My rear exhaust is 18 years old and still OK. At what year does it become impossible for it to still be there?

Does someone take it away on a certain birthday? Do I need to fit bigger locks on my garage?

Re: MR2 dB noise level

Mine still has the same standard back box on it from the day I bought it in 1994 when I asked the Toyota dealer to fit a new exhaust as a deal clincher. i.e. that same rear box has been on the car since 1994 and has never needed changing! The front pipe was first changed in 1997 and is still going s...

Here's an arty image of a mk1 MR2 that is (apparently) very desirable.

It's one of a kind in the UK and it's not red or black either!

Re: please save this super rare mk1

so do we all agree then if anyone wants to buy it they can and all those that don't, well they shouldn't! sorted, now move on #-o Absolutely. But if it is as desirable as so many posters seem to think and it's the only one in the UK then you would think they would have been pounding at the gates of...

Re: please save this super rare mk1

At the end of the day it's your money and your decision but there's a very good reason the AW10 cars are rare and that's because they are an automotive turd with poverty spec trim and a weedy engine. Was it a success in Japan? No. I can see it now.... (like the guy and his long suffering wife on the...

There's passionate? (obsessive? vulnerable?) collectors that collect anything from dirt to diamonds However, if so many people really are passionate about this model of car then it's curious why they haven't already imported one since they appeared in the 1980s? Waiting for a scrapyard sh!tter to mi...
