Hopefully just one of the cables came off at one of the ends!! Easier to check the stick end first - just pull the surrounds off and it,ll be obvious when you see it.

Strange!
I removed one from a rev 3 uk n/a a couple of months back and whilst I did a lot of swearing the only thing I removed was the lambda itself!! In fact the hardest thing was locating the bloomin thing..
Have another look matey its do-able

Re: [Mk2] [NA] Worth changing thermostat with cambelt/waterpump?
The oil pump is driven off the cambelt similar fashion to the water pump - do a search but the popular choice seems to be change it at the next belt change i.e not this change the next one

Re: [Mk2] [NA] Worth changing thermostat with cambelt/waterpump?
Thermostat nowhere near matey - actually it is but its not hindered at all by the cover, which i think is what you,re after? It,s a 3 minute jobbie if ever needed and there,s really no need to change a working one!

Re: Fuel consumption on a modified rev3 tubby...
My fuel light comes on when there,s anywhere between 7 and 13 litres still in tank so you can,t really judge your mileage based on those figures - the only true way to find out would be to brim fill her run her say 250 miles then what you can put back into the tank gives you an accurate mpg. I know ...
