Can someone elaborate on this pre-cat thing please. Where are they? What happens when they fail?

It is NOT an mot failure.

job done, these replacement KYB's are noticeably softer, much better ride. Comparing them on the bench the new ones have much less rebound damping.

Personally, I'd do standard dampers with lower springs & superflex bushes for road use.

erm, the rust will continue to spread behind your fibreglass bodge. Fibreglass is indeed strong, although not as strong as steel, but it has no strength as a repair when stuck to rusty steel. if its a good car & worth keeping, repair it properly. Fibreglass & filler is a joke, cut all rot out, weld in new metal & rustproof & it will be repaired permanently. I did mine 6 years ago & they are tottally rust free now.

I agree its not structural, but its within 30cm of a suspension mounting, also within 30cm of a seatbelt mounting so it must fail.
Also remember a repair must be continuous weld not spot welds. You can fail for an "inadequate repair" too !

mine has 124000 miles, it gets an oil change once a year & never needs topping up between.
