Re: Quick pre-cat question

Can someone elaborate on this pre-cat thing please. Where are they? What happens when they fail?

I'm from the other side

Hi, I'm new on this side of the forum as we've had a MK1 for many happy years but now we've just bought a '53 Roadster. Are there any issues I need to look out for? Also I'm thinking of changing the exhaust, doing this made a huge difference to the MK1, does it make a difference to the Roadster? The...

It is NOT an mot failure.

Re: damper confusion

job done, these replacement KYB's are noticeably softer, much better ride. Comparing them on the bench the new ones have much less rebound damping.

Re: damper confusion

Personally, I'd do standard dampers with lower springs & superflex bushes for road use.

damper confusion

I bought a suspension kit off Fensport, uprated springs & dampers, plus Superflex kit. Its waaaay too hard for road use, advice on this forum was that its the over stiff dampers. So I've bought some standard dampers & put the uprated ones on e-bay. But Fensport tell me its the springs that a...

Re: Rusty problem - advice from welders?

cut out dead steel treat any remaining rust with Jenolite fabricate new panel/patch from good steel weld it in and grind the welds back smooth'ish skimming of filler or fibreglass to make it look tidy then waxoyl the inside and paint/underseal/weatherproof the outside :thumleft: That for me is how ...

Re: Rusty problem - advice from welders?

erm, the rust will continue to spread behind your fibreglass bodge. Fibreglass is indeed strong, although not as strong as steel, but it has no strength as a repair when stuck to rusty steel. Have you ever pulled on a wheel arch with fibreglass in it? Lumps of it will come off in your hand. As I sai...

Re: Rusty problem - advice from welders?

fibre glass will be fine chap, any mot tester will get the little mot hammer bouncing back in their face before they bust it. welding will just cost you a fortune and they always rust through again anyhow. What a stupid bit of advice! How would you like to be in a car during a side impact if the si...

Re: Rusty problem - advice from welders?

if its a good car & worth keeping, repair it properly. Fibreglass & filler is a joke, cut all rot out, weld in new metal & rustproof & it will be repaired permanently. I did mine 6 years ago & they are tottally rust free now.

Re: Rusty problem - advice from welders?

I'm an mot tester.
I agree its not structural, but its within 30cm of a suspension mounting, also within 30cm of a seatbelt mounting so it must fail.
Also remember a repair must be continuous weld not spot welds. You can fail for an "inadequate repair" too !
