K20/k24 swaps

Post by rossonza »

Has anyone considered or even started this on their sw20 in the UK?

I was looking at engine mounts and adapter plates but the only place I can find them are hux racing who do not ship to the UK typically.

Can anyone recommend anyone elses products?

Cheers
Ross.

I'm pretty sure Hux are the only people who make a proper swap kit for this.

I looked into it but I feel like an NA K20 would feel a bit slow in a 1200kg car. If you wanted to go with turbo it looks like you have to start cutting into the rear bulkhead because the exhaust manifold is on the opposite side to a 3s.

Although I wonder what kind of power you can get out of a K24 without FI

The swap works better in a MKIII I recon

Edit: Looks like you can fit a turbo without cutting if you look at the last page of this
https://www.k20a.org/forum/showthread.php?t=210425

But it looks pretty tight and I feel like you'd want some heat shielding on that back bulkhead

I've managed to get in contact with hux and I'm sorting a family member bringing the kit back for me in their suitcase from the states. He said they do ship to the UK (although their site says they don't).

For sure n/a would be lower hp and torque. However there would be quite the weight reduction due to k20 being alloy etc and initially no k20 turbo setup.

I've decided on k20 for the rev range/VTEC range. It's about £400 more to purchase but I feel will be worth it.

Just adding up what I'll get for my engine bits and what's required. Luckily me using the cannibal kit and e153 makes life much easier. Also initially.going n/a will help.

You can get 300 out of the k20a2 I'm looking at. And 500 if you boost it.

Also I've seen the turbos fitted near the rear bulkhead. But some go sidewinder above the gap next to the gearbox. So no need to cut the rear bulkhead. That will be my plan.

How much power do K24s make anyway? Part of me likes the idea of a decent NA build.

I didn't realise the blocks were alloy also! So yeah you'd save a bunch of weight over the 3sgte

K24a3 197hp. 171 lb-ft standard.

Yeah exactly. A lot of weight to be saved.

There's a few Mk3's about, I bet there's a few SW20's around with the swap too.

Hux is at ~270whp, but thats a pretty big build with high compression pistons, cams, ITB's etc. I believe they do respond well to bolt ons though which is more budget friendly. I think the K24 really benefits from cams to wake it up a bit.

It's a very interesting swap IMO. Its possible to get an SW20 down to around 1000KG in a pretty stripped out form with the 3SGE, and with the weight saving of a Honda K getting it down to around that will be that much easier. Hux is just under that now, and still has a full interior.

K-swap only seems worth doing if you're going FI in my opinion - a fair bit of work for little gains if you stay NA (and building NA is obviously never cheap!) You might save about 50-60kg NA at a guess? :-k

If I was to start my build again i'd have went K24/20. Getting 500bhp from the 3sgte is an absolute money pit.

I think even a fairly stock K20 swap with standard bolt on mods would be decent in an MR2. No doubt you can cheaper for faster, but the K20 is about more than power.

K20 swap N/A Elises always feel much faster than there Toyota/Rover supercharged counterparts IMO even if they're less powerful... Just the way they rev!

Exactly why I'm looking at k20a2. For the revs. Especially as I recently got rid of my motorbike.

Well I look forward to seeing the build thread! :thumleft:

Again excuse my ignorance but I don't know honda stuff at all, are the fancy K24 builds using the k24 block and then using the head off a k20? Like a 5sgte build?

I *think* Hux is using a K24 head but with upgraded cams. But yeah, K24/K20 hybrid is a well known thing - https://www.hybrid-racing.com/blogs/hyb ... uild-guide

Totally is man. For what I've spent so far i could have had two k20 builds.

Kinda K20 related but have any of you guys seen that Hux have adapted the hybrid racing shifter

https://www.huxracing.com/online-store/ ... p122557284

I was kinda tempted to spend a stupid amount on it until I watched a video and realised I'd have to hack parts of the shifter surround off to even fit it.

I always thought the k20 had no torque.

K20A - between 202Nm and 215Nm @ 6000 - 7000RPM depending on specific version
K20A2 - 188Nm / 193Nm @ 6000RPM (multiple variants)
3SGE Gen3 - 192Nm @ 4800RPM
3SGE Gen4 - 210Nm @ 4800RPM
3SGE Gen5 - 220Nm @ 6000RPM
SR20VE - 195Nm @ 6000RPM / 206Nm @ 5200RPM

So no, comparing like for like they don't have much more or much less than other similar engines. They do make that torque high up, but they also make power at the high end of the rev range and have more RPM to play with.

When you add a turbo, its really no different to turboing any other 4cyl.

Small Necro, but have you guys been following boostedboiz on youtube?

They have a K24 swap with twin turbos in an MR2.

Its a drag set up so nto everything is relelvant. What did interest me was that from what I have seen the output splines on the driveshafts seemed to slide right into the MR2 turbo hubs.

They do a LS sleeve I think its called? Noit 100% sure on that one but it looks pretty impressive.

Yeah been following and also cleetus McFarland, Rob dahm,

All a great watch, interested to see how the twin turbo set up will perform, it's basically a 1 liter engine displacement with a turbo X2, I do wonder what the spool will be like, not folled from the beginning so maybe I have missed something with regards to the design behind it. Maybe it's going to rev to 10k+?
