[Mk2] [NA] -40mm lowering spring reccomendations?

Post by BALDYMONSTER »

Just been told that I need two new rear shocks which was sort of surprising but anyway I've got two inserts on their way.

I'm going to change the lowering springs as well while I'm at it and was wondering what others use?

I don't want to spend silly money but I don't want complete crap either, anyone got some suggestions?

What's your budget and what do you hope to achieve? Eg comfort or firm.

whatever you choose, don't get H&R -20mm springs. The fronts are way to stiff for the chassis.

Needs to be -40mm and preferably progressive rate.

I'm thinking Eibach -40mm progressive rate.

The others considered are Lestijor with the same spec but slightly cheaper, anyone used/using these and what is the opinion?

Years back I had Tein S. They were seriously low! I've had different coil overs since. Never tried eibach before but I'm sure people speak well of them.

I've had tein springs on before and found them well hard! Looked mint but drove awful, so bouncy.

I'd go coilovers if you can and get it corner weighted. Makes such a difference on an mr2.

If not i'd go eibach.

Are the teins that bad? I was just about to purchase some, can't afford to go coilovers this year after the engine rebuild so was going to get springs

Tein springs on the mr2 are ultra firm. They look awesome though.

Why do you _need_ to lower your car 40mm ?

Depends what you use your car for i guess?

There is a few pictures of my car sat on teins in the members profile (first 2 pictures) forums/viewtopic.php?t=194723

Sits great but just a really hard ride and at speed very bouncy.

Eibach are usually close to stock with regards to ride quality. I've had then on a clio beofre but never on the mr2.

The harsh ride isn't a problem, it's only a weekend car if that, but the bouncy is concerning

Because it's my car and that's how much I want to lower it by having experimented with different ride heights before on my previous MR2's.

I had a full Tein coilover setup on my first rev2 turbo MR2 and the ride was unbelievably harsh, to the point it was like there was absolutely zero damping whatsoever. :(

25% uprated inserts all round.

I am thinking that Eibachs maybe the way forward?

Anyone uses Lestijor? (SP)

It's really interesting hearing everyones experiences with different manufactures and spring types, really shows how much of a personal preference issue this is and how hard it is to advise. To throw my cents in, I tried a set of D2 coil-overs many years ago, and while corner weighting made a huge difference, the spring rate and damping particularly at the rear was never right for me, always under damped. I then switched to rev1 rebuildable struts with some old but still very good damper inserts that I believe were an adjustable KYB or Tokico, I can't remember - I got them of GTSchris' drag MR2 when he was shutting down. I fitted them with Tein S tech springs and found the ride terrible, far too low all round, especially at the front. I then tried a set of H&R 20mm and they transformed the drive, initial height was not quite perfect but after 5/6 months they settled very evenly and have given a great balance of comfort and stiffness. I think the most important thing you can do is find springs that match the dampers as close as possible, which is no easy feat!
