[Mk2] [Turbo] Brake slider boots dont fit?

Post by rossonza »

ive got my brakes apart as one of the sliders was all corroded as the boots werent fitted.... ive bought new boots and tidied/greased up the slider pin etc.

However the new boots wont fit in at all. i tried using a socket as per the DIY but it just crushed and mis-shaped the metal on the new boot.

i got the calipers out and the below are the measurements. seems quite a bit off. now im unsure if its my calipers or the new boots. they were purchased off mr2ben and state theyre suitable for "1989-2000" https://mr2-ben.co.uk/products/668

17.2mm OD new boot
15.5 IDA caliper slider

any ideas where i may have gone wrong? ](*,)

i used this guide:

You haven't got the remains of the old slider boot metal base still in the carrier, have you? (It certainly looks like it)

sadly not, theres just the OEM hole for the boots to go into. the new boots do have excess rubber on the underside which you can see. but there is definitely nothing in the hole (old boot etc)

It does look like the old metal base is still in there (I've made the same mistake myself) give that a few taps with a screwdriver/chisel and a hammer and see if it pops out

I know!, it looks like the guy that gave me the car had removed the boots before leaving the car to rot in a field.

ive cleaned out the insides of the slider of the carrier, so its nice and smooth and clean with the new pins. but jesus the old ones were shocking weren't they lol.

Wow. Never seen one that bad!

Be sure to check the bore inside the caliper. They may be unserviceable looking at that!

admittedly that was the worst one.

sorry thats what we cleaned out using a pillar drill, then a dremel attachment with a light sanding disk. the internals nice and smooth and shiny now.

Have you got the little bushing that goes on the end of the slider as well?
