I bought TRD1 from Mick (Topgun) back in October 2009.
Mick had put a lot of effort into getting it into a great condition and many may have thought it was finished.
Not me...I saw scope for making it even more original.
Since this 1993 car was brought back to a Toyota Technocraft factory in Tokyo in 1998 for 1 of the 36 limited TRD2000GT conversions and choice of spec upgrades, I decided to put as much of the TRD spec back into it as I could.

Re: Andy's Mk2 - TRD1 Back to the original
With regards to there being a curiosity about two number 1's. Well this is exactly the case - There are two number 1's. I'm guessing the first number one was a prototype, the second number one being the first car converted for a customer. That makes sense to me.
Each TRD2000GT was given a vin plate attached to the back of the frunk on the drivers side.
Each plate contains the model, conversion number, factory it was converted at and conversion date.
So SW200-0001 S9808 means it was customer car number one converted at the Shibaura factory in August 1998.
You can see that the white prototype/show car was built a couple months before mine in June 1998 and has the number M001 whereas mine is 0001.
I exchanged emails in March 2010 with Chisato Noaki from TRD Overseas Sales Group in an attempt to obtain written confirmation that my car was genuine. Although she would not send a letter she did confirm from her records that my chassis number SW20-0084047 was converted at the TRD factory.

Re: Andy's Mk2 - TRD1 Back to the original
Pretty quickly I found some Alumi K's. This is how I bought them:
And then refurbished by Alloy Art in Essex.
But they were the wrong offset. I spent ages pondering what to do. I did some measuring and calculations to try and work out the offsets but the number I came up with didn't match anything on the list I have.
I removed the blue Speedhut dials and replaced them with black Speedhut dials.
Put some better looking black headlight cowels on.
The car came with CMR ARB's and Eibach springs. I managed to source genuine TRD anti roll bars and TRD lowering springs from the USA. I had them delivered to a mate in NYC. When I went over for a holiday I took an extra case and managed to sneak them back. Then I sent the car off to Owen at Kent Car Craft to have them installed. Owen did a great job and also carried out the following:
- Replaced front discs and calipers with second hand reconditioned items
- All calipers repainted red
- Installed new steering rack gaiters
- Replaced OSF steering arm due to excessive free play
- Numerous leaks in exhaust system examined and repaired
- Removed Japspeed exhaust and replaced temporarily with Blueflame and decat pipe
- Replaced clutch
- Fabricated stainless steel manifold cover
- Repair weld carried out to one of the shockers
- Installed chrome TRD front strut brace
- Serviced and MOT'd
When I got it back, it drove brilliantly!
Soon enough more TRD goodies were found and sent to me...

Re: Andy's Mk2 - TRD1 Back to the original
I decided to send it to Patrick (headcase) for some TLC. I tore a bit of the rear bumper off whilst reversing into my garage. The front bumper had also been cracked due to the car being so low. There were a few other bits n pieces with the bodywork that I was unhappy about.
This prompted me to get a whole respray in Toyota Super Red. More importantly this is going with the theme of taking it back to the original. The Ferrari Rosso Corsa was nice, but wasn't Toyota.
Patrick worked incredibly swiftly. The front and rear bumpers had a lot of old paint on them and he had to strip them right back.
Under body was sealed. TRD exhaust painted black as per original spec and fitted.
Trims were satin blacked to get the red paint off that was there from last time.
And thanks to Andy (andyroo) for donating his n/a lid. My TRD is n/a and proud of it!
Below you can see the old engine lid in the Ferrari Red. It's hard to tell the difference in the photo, but in real life the Ferrari Red is very orange whereas the Toyota Red is red
The car came with Supra brakes on the front. They looked cool but I had Patrick remove them in favour of stock, initially because I thought they wouldn't fit with the Alumi K's. As it turned out, they would have fit with spacers. Doh! Anyway, the clamp test at MOT showed that the stock setup held tighter. Happy with that. CRN discs and EBC yellowstuff pads all round.
Went for a visit to Patrick's one day with a load of interior parts and by the end of it, the pile was gone!
TRD seats and steering wheel went in. Harnesses went in with brackets on the firewall. Not the exact harnesses from the TRD catalogue but same make and very similar.
The leather seats and centre consul with red double stitching by Harry at LSC interiors were sold to Patrick for his 3VZ TRD replica. I put his stock parts back in my TRD. It has to be original! Also managed to get some second hand alcantara doorcards.
All seat brackets painted black. Massive thanks to Dan (dpeg) for getting those cut.
The attention to detail was brilliant - even the interior paint was returned to a matte finish, just like they do it in the factory.

Hi Dan, I've actually installed that exhaust onto the TRD as the TRD exhaust is meant for a turbo so is far too loud with my n/a. I intend to get the TRD exhaust re-baffled.

I get that a lot mate, wait until you see my wide arched mk1 with supercharged 1MZ V6.....
Re: Andy's Mk2 - TRD1 Back to the original
Looks smart mate. Nice job. Think I prefer the volk wheels that were on before though.
Plus, I'm personally not a fan of spacers.

I liked the Volks but they didn't fit with the theme of going back to the original. Plus one of the rear wheels was a different offset to the other one.
RedMR² wrote:Plus, I'm personally not a fan of spacers.
Nor me, which is why I'm trying to get another set of Alumi K's in the correct offset. Or I could look at "re-barrelling" my wheels to make the correct offset.
Re: Andy's Mk2 - TRD1 Back to the original
Fair do's mate. Best of luck with finding some wheels that don't require spacers

I prefer the Volks and those spacers are paper weights IMO. But absolute credit to you for restoring this to factory / TRD spec, brilliant. This will be an icon amongst the MR2 community!
Incidentally it was me that bought your supra brakes!
A shame you wouldn't consider a turbo swap and utilise the TRD exhaust properly.

Yes I remember. Went on your beams!?!?

Blasphemy! lol. It's apparently a Tom's race engine. Very unique 2.2 litre 3SGE with stroker kit. Much faster than a standard NA.
Re: Andy's Mk2 - TRD1 Back to the original
Yeah, read that somewhere that the na TRD cars had a 2.2 litre engine.

It was entirely up to the customer what they wanted. #0001 is the only genuine TRD NA that I know of.
Re: Andy's Mk2 - TRD1 Back to the original
Great work! The only thing i would change is the front indictors from crystal to rev 4/5. Not as bad as lexus rear lights by any stretch but makes a difference. I know you had them on previously.
Thank god you changed the steering wheel too
This engine apparently had in the region of 200bhp, 40+hp jump!
Keep up the good work
