Rev1 - I think - MR2 Turbo Project

Post by h180eeu »

Thought i'd introduce my MR2 - i love her to bits, despite having blown 2 engines in 700 miles.

Anyway, there is a lot to do still and a lot done but i'll be concise here.

1991 Rev1 MR2 Turbo - Jap import
Image

Image

Currently undergoing heavy mechanical mods, engine, box, suspension etc and light cosmetic mods including a full respray (at home) in white.

I'll include a rew recent pictures for you to look at and see where i'm going.

bit more detail.

Engine is currently being built up with fully forged internals and an overbore to 2.1, tubular manifold and RMR inlet manifold, ported/polished and cammed cylinder head, Garrett GT30 turbo, Skyline R33 intercooler, aeroquip'd fuel system, oil system and breather system.
Gearbox is a later Rev3 box with the 2 way TRD LSD.

Wheels are 2 sets - Fronts are 2 piece Works Meister S1 in 17x7, Rears 3 piece Works Meister S1 in 18x9
Fronts run 185/35/17
Rears 215/35/18

front (ignore the tyre)
Image

lots else going on including gauges etc but my favourite little mod is my Radio - i'll explain - i don't like modern radios sat in old dashes, they look out of place - so i have a tape deck

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Image
photo (2) by andysfatrs, on Flickr

that takes my ifail.

So interior

Engine bay

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

and what i can only assume is 100Yen i found under the carpets

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Marginal Progress.

Tbar seals stripped off,

Image

Headlining out

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Pillar trims out

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Dashboard out

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

The start of an idea that will either see me really happy or looking for a new dashboard

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Standard Tunnel loom,

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Lightened loom to what i actually need

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Well my little dash idea worked out i think.

I used the newly-made holes to mount the gauges through the dash, rather than the intended top mount

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

this also had the advantage of dropping the gauges down a little

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

and started sanding the main body ready for paint. This shows the fantastic paint condition currently

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

trying to get rid of old respray lines etc

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Stupid drift dent

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

carried on with the sanding

o/s/r pillar

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

roof

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

threw some filler in the drift dent

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

sanded the n/s quarter and pillar more

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

got some glass removal specialists out, they soon hated me for giving them this job.

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Windows out

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Threw some filler primer on the n/s/r to check levels, and threw some more filler on.

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Took the drill and wire wheel to the remaining bonding on the window seals.

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Cut the rust from the n/s boot corner - seals were gone and it was collecting water.

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

still working late into the night

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Filler primer sanded back and filler sanded back

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

quick rest while waiting for some filler to set

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

sanding filler while trying to retain swage line

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

reprimed and more filler

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

while this was setting i decided to remove the front foglamps that were siezed on. Drilled the bolt heads off and removed the lamps - then cracked out the blow torch

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

and wound them out with pliers

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

leaving the front properly stripped

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

cleaned out the boot

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Sanded back the filler again...

time number...? 8? i'm rubbish at bodywork. but the car had a message for me

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

yep, i'm a xxxxx for making the dent originally

Sanded back the filler again and re-primed, still not perfect but close now

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

quick coat of primer on the roof ready to flat back

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Coat 1 of white

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

inner arches

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Standard black sill painted in with white, hopefully make the car look a little lower

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

obviously still a lot of painting left to do but getting closer

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

and a quick check of my colour scheme

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Needs at least another 3 coats on the entire car, and then flatting back and buffing. Hopefully will work out ok :?

with no paint i decided to make up the oil coller mount... ignore the cable tie

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Then i went and got some more paint today so cracked on.

Blasted in the frontal boot area bonnet thingy bit :?

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

and the engine bay

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

and boot

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

then gave the entire shell another 2 coats

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

and gave the o/s/f wing a couple of coats

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

and got called a pikey for my adjustable hanger system

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Can slowly start building the main shell up now which is a quite satisfying bit :D

front boot/bonnet/not engine bay

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Boot and engine bay

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Back end with wheel

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

buffed up the quarter, not too bad for a garage job

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

and tucked in at bed

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Done a bit more today,

Got the rear wiring in and routed inside the panels

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

tucked accesibly but out of the way.

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

all the fuel line bulkhead fittings in and tightened, loom in, Cooler in and mounted.

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

any access holes trimmed

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

coolant pipes in and radiator in and connected.

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

bumper bar and mount brace mounted up

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

really dispondant with the paint atm but i might give another go at flatting soon.

But it's white, apart from where the carpet is going

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

also got the bootlid and door in a fresh coat of paint.

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

decided to maintain some of the history of the car, so masked up the inside of the filler flap

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

and some random car-whoring photos

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Hit a slight snag now as my compressor has deceased today but hopefully sort that very soon and carry on. There are other bits to be done still so not the end of the world.

Not been a great deal of progress really as i've been busy with other things, I returned to the scrappy armed with a raiding kit of tools.

Came away with some leather seats that are pretty tatty

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

and mint condition matching door cards

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

along with the later model revised tweeter covers, that allow better tweeters to be fitted along with being better at sound transfer

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

also got this genuine Toyota CD changer

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

and headunit

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Proper JDM unit, in half english half Jap

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

all tested and all in full working order, also very easy to navigate through aswell

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Also got some Tbar glass panel leather bags (the glass goes in them when removed to protect them slightly)

£30 the lot

Picked up a spare set of tailights and a centre panel, complete with reverse lights and MR2 badge.

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Seat condition, passenger outer bolster

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

drivers outer bolster

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

anyway, gave them to a mate to do a gentle refurb on them, i stated i wanted them to look aged, but smart.

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Image

drivers seat

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Bought a new jack...

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Started converting the jap unit to a ISO connection set up. Same will be done to the car to make radio changes easy.

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

started to mock positions for components, like the autochanger and also routed the main power (just a 4awg)

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

ran the rca cables, front component wires and remote wire through the centre of the car.

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

ran the ecu wiring loom through into the engine bay through a grommet and wrapped with matching cable sheathing.

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

and seats in place

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

been messing with the wiring and started to sort out the gauges in redyness for dash refitting.

Also colour coded all the gauges etc

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

vid of gauges

Rear view of the gauge wiring

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Bolted the dash in

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Wired in a full new radio loom, 12v, SW12v, Earth, Illumination, remote

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

Also completed and tidied up the gauge wiring.

Tested - good old 76-90fm...

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

and illumintion dimmed

Image
Untitled by andysfatrs, on Flickr

also wired the taillights to operate as a set of 4, rather than the inners being foglights

Image

Cheers for looking - Comments/criticism welcome

Thank you All.

So far i'm finding the site a very welcoming place.

Does anyone have any advice for budget brake upgrades?

I also have an N/A Rev2 Parts Donor but tbh for an extra 20mm? I'm not sure i want to go that route, especially as the Discs and pads need replacing on that one anyway.

Also can anyone confirm to me if the MR2 brake lights work independantly of the ignition please. I've tried testing on my spare car but then i remembered i stole the fuse box.

rev2+ sized brakes and carbotec pads are generally considered the best option for std sized brakes

wms do a kit a trader on here, and theres usually a group buy for a big brake kit, the kit is for a set of spacers that uses the stock calipers and bigger discs, rx8 and twin turbo supra iirc

Thanks for the replies, ive ordered a new K&N air filter which hopefully should arrive soon.

Also been in contact with the user who organises the group buys and he says he will start another soon. So in preperation for that i have removed the Brakes from my Rev2 Donor in preperation for that.

I've also been looking at caliper rebuild kits, Big Red kits. Any feedback on these?

The current plan is Rev2 calipers with the adapters, 323mm Supra discs, Carbotech pads.

Very impressive for a home build, my hat is off!!

Yes, brake lights work independently to the ignition on the MR2 (and most Japanese cars).

Thanks for the support,

The wheels, haven't cost me too much as i bought them as 2 pairs and i waited 10 months to find the complete set. Having said that, look closely the fronts are Meister S1 and the rear are Meister S2, the rears are split rims, the front not. Beggars can't be choosers.

I have purchaced a set of front Big Brake kit brackets from a user on here and may have agreed the purchace of another nice little part. Also waiting on the delivery of a new K&N Air filter.

...Should've just bought a white one!!

Lovely work mate, lovely. The wheels are an excellent choice too, it'll look great when it's all done. Begs the question - keeping the standard engine...?

This car was £300, the paint is £80 :D also i get to learn.

Engine wise;

Rev3+ Big Valve, ported and polished Head
Piper 'Ultimate Turbo' cams
RMR Reverse feed CNC inlet
75mm Mustang TB
R33 Skyline GTR 'Monster' intercooler
Tubular exhaust manifold
Garrett GT3071RS Turbo
Aeroquip Breather System
External Wastegate
3" Turbo back stainless exhaust system
Forged oversize Pistons (2.1 litre)
Forged Rods
6 Puk paddle clutch
Aeroquip Fuel system with billet fuel rail
Aeroquip Oil System with remote filter and oil cooler.
ARP Head and Rod bolts
As a quick summary

And yes, i've a major wheel crush on the Meisters
