Perfect Sunday morning

Post by Peter C »

Short tale of motoring bliss:

Woke up early on Sunday morning (6:45am!), girfriend still asleep, looked out of the window, perfect blue sky and my MR2 parked out in the drive.

By 7am I was in the driving seat, by 7:15am I was on the A416 in Denham heading towards Buckingham. Those that don't know the A416, it's the most amazing road, best stretch is from Aylesbury to Buckingham, all dips and bends, often used (and abused) by bikers and fellow sports car drivers.

The roads were clear, at one point I was overtaken by a mad (it was freezing cold) man driving a 1930s style open sportcar (couldn't tell you what it was), my heater was blowing hot air while the K&N and Mongoose produced a perfect blend of hiss and roar, Virgin Radio playing quietely on the FM band, sheer motoring bliss! With the exception of couple of squirts I kept within the speed limits, didn't do any 180s, didn't race any Novas or clash with Z3 drivers.

What a perfect way to start the day! And I managed to drive back into London in time for breakfast and the Sunday papers!

Recommended!

Sounds good. I love it when you can do a bit of spontaneous trip just for the hell of it.

Last year i used to go for a lot of blasts up the Cat and Fiddle (bit of an infamous road!) near where i live and would just cruise through the peak district getting into the groove for a bit and then slowing down to admire the scenery.

:thumright:

PS its so refreshing to read a post which isn't a 'Vs' /traffic light GP for a change.

That is the point! Its called 'Driving experiences' in an attempt to get away from 'Vs' style threads. This kind of thread is the kind of stuff that is perfectly within this topic.

FAO Lauren: My pleasure. All being well I'll be off for a re-run this Sunday! :D

FAO: Aidy: See above - see you there? By far the best section of road is from Aylesbury to Buckingham. Some of the twists and turns are simply amazing. Past Buckingham one of the roads eventually leads to Silverstone, hence the large presence of bikers and sports cars.

FAO IICause_OneII: Thanks for the pointless contribution.

JJ, (you cheeky bu88er)

15 minutes is plenty of time to take a whizz, have a quick shower, stick a pair of jeans on and run down to the car.

I've never been a fan of Novas even though (many years ago) I helped a mate turn a 1.2L 3 door into a 15" alloy wheeled lowered chav mobile with more ICE than you could reasonably fit into a car designed with shopping in mind.

An early unmodified GSi / SR / Sport (the twin carb 1300cc one) could be considered as a classic but they're not for me. A Chevette HSR on the other hand.....

Hmmm Chevette HSR.... I've driven an HS on dellortos, was quite funny in a way as i picked it up for a friend of mine and remember upsetting a cossie (this was 15 years ago!) up the A13.

A good friend of mine had an HS with 175bhp @the wheels, it was stonkingly quick for what it was. They handled pretty well too with a 5-link live axle. cool cars. :thumright:

Lauren,

Do you read Retro Cars magazine? It's full of 60s/70s/80s modified, used and abused motors. There's a staple diet of RWD Escorts, Chevettes, TR7/8s.... as well as the odd bizarre Jap - there are a couple of cool Datsun Violets in this months issue.

I really like what you're doing to your red Mk1. It's good to see an honest restoration job like yours whilst most members "mess about" with their cars, creating monstrosities in the process!

When it's finished we should get together for a photoshoot. An early red Mk1 and an early red MkII! Might be worth giving one of the glossies a call?

It's my car's birthday next week - 15 years old!
