OK
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
- so I'm a newbie to this forum so bear with me.
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
Wife has a stock UK
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
'97 MR2 with factory fit 18401 radio
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
/ cassette head unit
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
(single DIN with blanking plate below).
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
She wants to play CDs
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
- not unreasonable.
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
What are my options
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
(excluding paying
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
£400+ to Toyota dealer)? Before I start pulling the fascia apart:-
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
1.
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
Are the amps built in to the head unit or separate
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
(if so, where are they)?
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
2.
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
I'm guessing passive since no subs visible?
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
3.
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
Is this a Fujitsu
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
/ Panasonic
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
/ whatever unit under the skin?
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
4.
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
The head unit has CD controls on it
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
- so this suggests pre-wiring for a changer; what's the product code for the appropriate Toyota CD unit and where does it normally fit? Are the leads likely to be in situ already?
5.
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
Is replacing the Original head unit with a third-party combined radio/CD a better bet
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
(don't need cassette)?
6.
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
What third-party units would you suggest as suitable matches?
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
7.
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
Where might I find suitable units? Looked on e-pay for Toyota units and most of the offers have been for a self-contained single-slot CD player coupled with the Type 1 head unit
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
(ours is Type 2 according to the manual).
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
There are many posts suggesting that these CD units are prone to skipping and ejecting the CDs.
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
Not bothered whether single CD or changer; MP3 ability not necessary; looking for simple cost-effective upgrade without tearing the car apart.
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
Quite happy to keep the existing head unit since it works OK and integrates well cosmetically
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
(don't really want silver unit with bright blue LEDs, graphic equaliser and loads of bits that don't add anything to quality of playback
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
- yes I'm a flat-earth hi-fi geek).
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
If I could source a good used CD unit for
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
£60-80 with straight forward fitting I'd be well pleased.
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
A quick net-scan suggests that a new
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
(non-Toyota) CD/radio/amp all-in-one head unit is gonna cost a tad more.
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
.
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)

Couldn't find answers after pouring through forum after forum so apologies if this has been covered
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
(just point me at the appropriate post).
![](./images/smilies/spacer.gif)
Thanks for any help.
