starter not working

Post by Ian Geary »

OK last thing to fix on the car.

The starter works fine when it's hotwired, so I'm sure its earthed (unless the soleniod has a seperate earth) and 12v is getting to it in the main connection (see pic below)

It's the signal wire that hasn't got any voltage when the key is turned.
This should plug into the brown connecter on the picture below

When the key is turned all I can ehar is a faint tick from the engine relay box. Is there anything in here that affects the starter motor, or is it just fuel / ignition relays doing there thing at the same time?

I think I'm going to have to take it to an alarm specialist, or maybe just wire in a start button.

Hi Ian,

Dunno whether or not you have solved this but what I can tell you is that the solenoid feed (wire that plugs into brown connector) comes from the starter relay which is located in the rear boot behind the engine bulkhead carpet. It is the green relay next to the engine ECU.

The factory fitted immobiliser inhibits this feed to the starter solenoid by making the -ve side open circuit if the imobiliser is activated. To unset the imobiliser use your key to lock and unlock the drivers door ie: turn key all the way towards the front of the car then all the way to the rear.

If this doesnt work you may have a fault in the ECU. You can over come it by connecting the wire that goes from the relay to the theft detterent ECU straight to chassis..this will be one of the smaller wires on the green relay and i believe it is white with a black stripe. Hope this helps.

If you need any further info ask away.

Cheers...Bob

Cheers Bob,

I haven't fixed it yet actually, but I'm seeing the car again tomorrow and will be rooting round in the boot with my multi meter!

I'll try that door thing first though!

I do have a cobra alarm fitted as well, but as I didn't touch any of the wiring for this, I 'm hoping it's not playing up.

Hi Ian,

As a further bit of help to you if you check out the circuit below in the BGB(starting & ignition circuit 48 ) and look towards the bottom of the drawing you will see that there are two options for the starter relay coil earth. W/O theft detterent it goes str8 to chassis and With theft detterent it goes to the theft detterent ECU..wire is W-B which is white with black stripe. This is the one that needs to be connected to chassis if its the ECU playing up.

got this sorted now - cheers for the help.

A quick check of the starter relay showed it wasn't getting any power.

Looking at the wiring diagram, the relay gets its 12v feed from the starter itself!

but instead I'd bolted this feed up to an earth point. Well, they do look pretty similar.

So after connecting the power feed into the relay it went first time.
