mitsi GTO import. vs me!

READ THIS IF YOU LIKE, UP TO YOU, IF YOU DONT LIKE THIS DRIVING EXPERIENCES SECTION, LOOK AWAY NOW!

had a really good burn with one of these today. he was certainly up for a little chasing. Its still totally bugging me whether this was an NA or TT!! im trying to find pics on the web now. defo had GTO on the back, cant even remember which reg it was!! but after our little drag on some small dual carridge ways which involved some roundabouts, we headed off onto a motorway! pretty sure he was following me at this point. After we had another lil burn with speeds up to ***mph, we pulled up at some lights at the next junction, he wound down his window, so so did i!!
he shouted out "that is one f*cking quick mr2!!!", which made me smile. he asked the bhp, i guessed really, said 220bhp. lights went green and we strolled round the corner as there was a few other cars. I kicked myself afterwards cause at that point i coulda asked whether it was a TT!!! after waving and flashing, he headed off one way, i went the other.

im 95% sure it was a TT, i was gunning it before hand (i was always infront), he was keeping with me, but soon as we reached a certain speed, he started gaining, so i can only assume it was a TT!

first time someones actually chatted with me instead of giving me evils!
nice to see 2 peeps enjoying there cars and respecting other fast cars!

ps, i can only asume he sounded so suprised by saying "that is one f*cking quick mr2", because he was driving a TT!
just a guess though!

n/a are very slow.
early tt's pull 276 bhp (supposedly..), later tt's pull 320 and are that little bit quicker. something like 5.5 to 60. Above that (60)the 2 isnt a match for a gto. on the track though, the 2 will have the upper hand

I almost bought one, but hated the handling and lack of reliability.

he was defo gainly when we had a empty stretch, but only slowly, i was keeping my own, but i knew that the longer the road went on, he coulda overtaken me.

still though, to get a comment like that after our little burn, that made me feel pretty cool!

The 2 isn't a match for the GTO !!

Your having a laugh aren't you ??? Did you not notice the lug weight hes carrying about and in real world comparisons.... a 1600+kg car with 320 bhp is a crock.

I was always a fan of them till I saw how they really went .... no match for the 2.. more like no match for the GTO !!!

If they're stock for stock, then the ole V6 TT will have the legs on the the MR2 from about 140 ( yup... contradict myself ) but a tweeked MR2 and a tweeked GTO .. the MR2 will leave it for dust !!

Totally agree about tuned v tuned. Its v difficult to tune a gto apparently unless throwing loads of money at it, whereas the 2 can easily can improved in power and handling.

When i said later tt's are that bit quicker, i meant than the older tt's (sorry-didnt make myself clear).

GTO are bloody heavy, but look at the supra. Thats gotta be a similar weight to the gto (although only RWD), yet is still a stupidly quick car, especially at higher speeds.

P.S. JJ, thinking back to old imoc, am i to assume you were called CRANK KILLER? Is it like a clark kent/superman thing. The two willl never be seen in the same place at once.

Don't even make me laugh again and compare it with a supra... supras a good 200-300kg lighter thanks to its forward thinking in construction... some aluminium panels etc etc.. no heavy weight, power quenching 4wd system !!

You got me ! :D

Though I'm more of a clark kent for the majority of the time - big and stupid !!

Am going to a find a garage this next week that i dislike so can can test the GTO again. have only driven one briefly for a half hour test run b4. Supra and mr2t are in my head still (just about) so i might be able to make a mental comparison.

If it doesnt beat my FTO in terms of straight line speed and handling by a considerable amount, i will very extremely upset. (and sucking upto JJ). [-o<

Look at it from another angle... a basic performance upgrade on the supra ( UK spec ! ).. I mean a slight boost increase, air filter and exhaust and you'll be able to get past a TVR cerberra.

Standing start to a 1.25 mile line... the speed supras cross the line are between 168 and 175 mph !! thats a stock engine with a boost tweek ! Cerberras 154- 165 mph !

I don't think any GTO has managed to get past a cerberra even if its had £5k thrown at it !

Bang for buck in the bigger league of cars.. supra ... point and squirt car - MR2 turbo - I now it sounds biased both being toyota, but toyota did get quite a few things right !!

Not thought of a late 200 sx ?? bit of a scaled down Supra, uglier car.. but if you want that 4 seater thats comfy ....... ?????

200sx=Image

I took the GTO out. It was a very good drive. V quick. If they were more reliable, i might consider one.

However, i made up my mind a while back to buy a little two seater again!

Cant wait to pick up the new MX5!

Only kidding. 95 Spec GT Tbar Turbo. By this time tomorrow, i will know whether or not, i bought it (auction in japan)

Roll on MR2 number 4. Give me 18 months and i'll be chasing the big boys down the quarter.

had it not been a 2 again, it would have been a supra or r32 gtr.

The gto still appeals, but i havent got enough hair on my chest yet.

r32 gtr.

Lol !! What an crap looking car... I just hate the R32's !

GTO's do get a lot of gearbox problems unfortunately... when one of them goes.... normally the transfer to the rear drive hub assembly - its an easy £1500 straighaway !

MR2's Bang for buck - can't beat them !! :)

See you around ! :)

The gtr would have been just for driving. Maybe an r33/34 for the looks if i had the money. Would have also picked up a cheap diesel for work tho.

I had g/box probs on my fto, and as i understand so do evo's, so i assume mitsi cant make a decent 'box.

hi guys.having owned and driven several gto's and mr2s as well as quite a few cars (between me and my wife weve got a mk2 mr2, gto tt , 300zx tt and a scooby) i thought i would give an unbiased opinion.
the mr2 and gto were built for different purposes.the mr2 to be a well handling light agile sports car (hence the mid engine/rwd).
the gto was built as a sports tourer to showcase some of mitsi's technology 15 yrs ago.things like 4 wheel steering ,electrically controlled suspension and elec everything.it was built for cruising not racing although when set up corectly can be pretty good as seen in the jap touring car races back in the day.
it is very heavy (1800kg) and handles oddly as standard.but once you uprate the suspension everything changes and you can whip skylines round roundabouts.
the mr2 WILL beat the gto off the line to around 70mph but then the gto will come back and pull past all the way to 170mph+.
the gto is expensive to tune where as the mr2 is relitivly cheap and probably a better platform to start with due to weight. and reliability
i agree with the gear box being weak on the gto.i have had mine rebuilt twice in 4 yrs for different faults.they are quite strong but deffinatly dont like drag starts without having a uprated clutch.if used correctly they can be fine.but they are a common problem.
i think the mr2 is a more fun car to drive (i like to slide :) )
as i said.they are built for different reasons so its all swings and roundabouts.both cars have their plus and minus points and alot can be said for the drivers abilitys too.a good driver in a slower car will beat a bad driver in a faster one.
just my opinion

Just going back to the start of this topic... it MUST have been a TT GTO that you were racing as I had a run with a NA one in my old Escort RS turbo (210bhp@flywheel) and dusted it. It was serrrriiiiiiiiiiiiiiously slow!

But I've raced the TTs before and they are quick for such a heavy car, will be interesting to meet one in my MR2 when it's back on the road.
