[Mk2] [Turbo] Been Fleeced?

Post by Stretchermunkey »

Hi Guys
Bought a Rev 1 turbo last year for £3000,
was still being fixed up and was due to be finished within 30 days.
paid deposit etc, 30 days came and went, 4 months late I eventually took delivery of car. Still some bits and bobs to be done. 1 day later exhaust starts blowing. 3 weeks later the car deposits all the oil onto the road, this was due to incorrect fitting of oil can. couple of weeks later the clutch master cylinder goes, then couple of weeks later the engine starts knocking and the whole car grinds to a halt, (? seized engine). Its now been off the road since end sept, I have been constantly promised that the car will be towed and they will have a look, still waiting
This was bought off a reputable trader.
outstanding probs with car
- Engine completely stuffed
- Dodgy electrics ( some dash light not working etc)
- EBC not functioning correctly
- Drivers door painted, crap job, still need redoing
- speakers still waiting to be fitted
Is this just joys of turbo ownership, or is someone having a laugh?
Many thanks Steve

Don't forget this car was bought last year when prices were slightly better. and it was bought from a supposed reliable affiliate from this site, I was happy to pay over the odds as I thought I was buying a well restored car, new wheels, recon turbo and expert restoration.

Why did you take delivery of a 'half done' car!! Especially knowing the faults? Did you pay the balance on delivery too... #-o

To be honest, you've bought a dog. If it came with a warranty, throw it at them. If not, threaten legal proceedings if you can afford it...

Could I ask what "incorrect fitting of oil can" is? A new one for me!!

Also, slave cylinder going is fairly unpredictable. However, you haven't specified what 'work' was supposed to be done in the 'ahem' 30 days (4 month) prior to ownership. This work may be of relevance.

Time to name and shame maybe....

Im buying a rev 1 turbo next week for 2300. But its in very good condition. No problems at all. Sounds like youve been shafted mate. So all the problems were meant to be fixed and the car delivered for 3k.
What i was wondering was why they didnt send someone to tow it within a few days :-s

Theirs allways two sides to every story,
name :thumleft: ,
and give them the opportunity to respond and hopefully agree on a course of mutually acceptable action.

£3k is well above average for a rev 1 turbo. I wouldn't buy a car which needed anything doing on it. Just wouldn't trust the dealer to do it properly. Hope you get this sorted out.

you should name the dealer - give them a right to reply and resolve if necessary.

Yes, spot on that man.

You have had some bad luck... but it is an old car so you can always expect problems... put it down to the joys of owning 18 year old turbo charged cars

A few of those problems were there when the car was bought.. so why did he buy it... and why did he not knock the price down or walk away? You cant completly blame whoever sold it to him! Buyer beware!

I honestly dont know anything more about it than you. It just annoys me when people buy second hand cars and then complain about sellers when the the car goes wrong! If there were problems with the car then walk away..

I know what your saying Ollie but not everyone is mechanicly experienced and by the sounds of it hes bought it off a trader who was "restoring" it for him.

At the end of the day if its off a trader it must be "fit for purpose" and anyone whos a decent person wouldnt flog a car which is a dog to anyone. Its just not a nice thing to do :-(
