Right, I've been doing a fair bit of thinking lately. I've got a year to go on Pat's finance.
Current re-settlement figure is £3.5K. I can pay this off from savings and then once Pat's HP clear I would look for probably a private sale. Pat is easily worth more than the finance, so anything above that would mean a lower loan for the new car. Mark has money in ISA that we could use to clear the finance, then sell Pat and pay Mark back so that wouldn't be a problem.
As I'm now nearing 40, I thought it an ideal time to have a mid-life crisis(!) as you do of course!
So I'm going to live the dream, well to be more accurate I'm going to buy a car I've wanted since I was 12 years old because if I don't do it now, I fear I will never do it!
I'm going to go for an AE86 I reckon for around 8K I can get a really clean car imported. Am currently in contact with Miguel from Newera. The thinking behind this is that AE86's just do not really depreciate so it would be a good investment and I could have a fair bit of fun in it doing trackdays and the odd bit of drifting (I've drifted one before and it was a lot of fun). I would also use it as a daily driver interspersed with the other half's Yaris when I needed to.

Bring it on!

I asked God for a bike, but I know God doesn't work that way. So I stole a bike and asked for forgiveness.
Re: Lauren's AE86. Pics on page 13.
I'm certain it would depreciate in value if you rag the boobs out of it round a track.

Not originally, thankfully!
I have a feeling Toni would like a Panda red one on throttle bodies.

I have to confes, I have never really seen the fascination with these things Lauren. They're butt ugly, old as the hills and about as powerful a mild breeze.

Re: Lauren's AE86. Pics on page 13.
But you have to remember Matt, I've been besotted by the AE86 since I was twelve and saw one that used to live down my road. I guess you either love the AE86 or you don't. This is my chance to bag a really clean and well sorted one. Need to scratch that itch!
They aren't that quick, but I don't mind that, the handling is properly old school, drift to your heart's delight, also handle well when set up too. They are just a hoot really and I can't help but love the looks. I could have a lot of fun with an AE86. No probs getting for JAE too.
They are depreciation free too which is a nice bonus.

I was going to say that for £8K you could get a decent car
Fair play Lauren, if it's a car you've wanted for years and you can afford to do it then go for it, and I hope it's everything you want it to be and more. You'll have to keep us updated with both the search and the ownership experience when you get it

Of course Dan.
Also did I mention that Mark has a lovingly rebuilt 4AGZE sitting in his parents garage? Plus we still have loads of 4AGE lying all over the place.

I guess I always wanted an MR2 when I was about 13 Lauren and I ended up buying one.
Sadly every other itch I really really want to scratch is now either too old or too expensive

I'd have one if i had the spare cash for another toy. Not sure i'd use it as a daily driver now, as like you said, the values aren't dropping on well kept originals. Maybe too many miles will see depreciation rise??
Loads of fun to drive and also quite cheap to run! it's win win in my eyes.

Re: Lauren's AE86. Pics on page 13.
That's pretty much my thinking Bri. Not too bad on the old juice, or insurance really.
I think mileage would have an affect on depreciation, but I do about 12K miles per year which isn't too bad really. I wouldn't mind though, I don't reckon there's many cars I could buy that would hold their value like an eight-six.
The other bonus is that Mark is looking for new premises for his business at the moment and one of his requirements is that he needs to park the works van inside the unit. That to me sounds like we'll have a workshop, so bearding parties could be back on and it will mean a dry, warm place for any TLC which will no doubt be required. This also means that I can default to Mark's Yaris if needed and Mark the work van, so we have a back up plan.
Just need to ensure it all falls into place now!

AE86 for thee win BUT I think you'd be a little mad to import one and spend £8k! There must be some in the country that match what you are after (assuming Panda Trueno with the necessaries already done?).

You could be right. Am going to a big AE86 meet at the Ace Cafe in April to talk to those in the know. Doesn't seem to be much up for sale at the moment though, just a few recently imported cars. Haven't had a proper conversation with Miguel yet, so just exploring the options. Obviously if I could fine one that fits my spec in the UK then I'd go for that. I want a Levin, not such a fan of the Trueno really. Panda is fine but also happy with solid colours as long as not black or yellow.
Driftworks is a possibility, but I don't want a drift car, I want a road car with a bit of light tuning done. On the other hand if Miguel can find me exactly what I want then it might be worth a little extra cost as I want to get the best I can.
Oh and bearding parties are the way forward, you should come up!
