TOYOTA TO UNVEIL NEW GRMN HYBRID CONCEPT AT NÜRBURGRING

Post by Rogue »

I got back from Donington today to find an email from Toyota in my inbox.

Okay, so let's not get carried away and presume that this means that there might be a new MR2 on the horizon, but it's the best indication yet that someone at Toyota is still thinking that way:

It looks very much to me like there's still a ZZW30 chassis underneath there. It's got a 2GRFE powering the rear wheels and electric motors powering the front.

Holy crap that's hideous  Looks very much like the Zagato mk3 to me, and that's not a great thing. I'd much rather they developed a brand new platform rather than rehashing something that's already at least 13 years old, too.

Still, at least it's got a proper engine in it :thumleft:

I love that they are even taking the time to demonstrate that they still have some interest in this type of car, the prototype isn't the best looking car I've ever seen- but I like the concept

I think it looks stunning. Imagine the headlights with an aerodynamically shaped lens covering them and it tones the front end down considerably.

I think it's lush.
I like the way the intake stems from the door sill, the built up engine cover area rather than a flat deck, it helps beef it up and I imagine it has a great profile. Also the detail at the rear qtrs... lead into the rear lights? Imagine it in monocolour with just a few bits of detailing rather than that hideous grey plastic looking finish and as Patrick says enclose the lights (H&S would probably insist anyway looking at the current arrngement), maybe soften the front lower edges a tad
Would you buy a z4, boxster or 370 conv when you could have that? If it is the mk3 chassis it maybe comes in at what.. 1250kg? That's adding weight for the front motors and some tech but also allowing for some lightweight material use. With a 2gr-fe and the mk3 chassis.

It's going to weigh 1500kg or less according to the press release, so yeah, I'd definitely take the much lighter and more powerful Boxster thanks.

What the 'push me pull you'. Even if it has a better power to weight it still looks like ... well, like it does.

PS. The boxster weighs pretty much the same... 1440 ish unladen and over 1600 all up. Power is only 310 so not a lot in it. Plus with the toyota you wont waste any time trying to open the door the wrong way 'cos you can't tell which way your car is facing.....

Unladen 987 S is 1355kg DIN according to the Porker site. Not sure whether Toyota are quoting DIN or EG though, hoping EG else it's a shedload heavier.

That ran the Lexus RX400h drivetrain, this has the more powerful RX450h version.
