PS3, wired or wireless??

Post by un1eash »

Just wanted to know if people use there PS3 wired or wireless? Ive got a 4-5mb connection through sky using a netgear wireless router. Not sure on the speed i'm getting but i get about a 60% signal.

Do people using wireless get along alright when playing online?

I have a cat5 cable running into my computer because the wireless on vista and xp is rubbish and kept dropping out so i thort i might run this to a little 5 port switch and then split it of to the ps3 and computer.

a wired connection will obviously be a bit more stable and reliable but i dont think you should see any downside to using wireless really.

What size of data is transmitted when playing online, how many kbps is needed without causing lag.

packet size all depends on the game mate.

COD4 obviously takes more than say tetris.

your download should be fine. its the upload that we lack here in the UK and most people forget that thats the main factor.

a 1mb line would be fine for gaming but the upload speeds we get here in the UK are crap. it used to be limited to 256kbs but i think you can get in the region of 400kbs now and to be honest, thats still not great when our american cousins are playing around with 1+mb upload speeds.

sky offer 768 kbs upload (just under 1meg)
there are about 3 companies that offer a 2meg upload also

Played Resistance over my wireless without fault, on a mere 1mb Tiscal wireless with 100% reception.

Then tried to play WWE Smackdown ( ) and it was jerky as hell. Turned off the WEP encryption and all was fine, but then just decided to go wired and keep the encryption since the router is less than 3m from the ps3 in my lounge!

Not had any probs with COD4 on my wired.

Im lucky as Im only 500m from the exchange. I use a netgear wireless router upstairs and have the ps3 in the lounge. The download speeds are mega fast, a lot quicker than the pc. I have an 8meg connection with a pc and laptop all sharing the same router. I would say in my case anyway that wired and wireless are as good as eachother.
