Steering sensor.

Post by -:[KM]:- »

Just got a new steering wheel like the one The Shaf was on about not so long ago....

Well then....

Took the original wheel off and come across some sort off sensor behind the assembly which is circular with slots in it. :-k
What does this do? Is it important..... Because it is smashed :(

Is there a way to disable/trick it into working?
Also, what is the best way to reconnect the horn?

hi keith, sounds like the power steering sensor....if you dont have PS then i dont know what it is,but if so it feeds the PS ecu with rate of turn info so that your power steering works properly....it might be a toyota extravagance, you will probably find everything feels ok without it steering wise.

Cheers Paul,
I've slipped the silver disc back into the plastic housing where the sensor is. Had to do that to get the PS to work... the girlyfriend would't be able to drive me from the pub otherwise!!

Just a bit worried it might cook the steering pump or something. The disc has slits in it and is obviously supposed to turn.....

No smoke out bonnet yet though....

Might try and get a new one from somewhere.

Regards,
Keith

That's what I mean....

Dropped in the silver disc, that should rotate with the steering wheel, to fool the ecu into thinking there is a feedback [-o<

When I get a bit of time - the camera is coming out!!!!

Too late for the camera....

Ravaged Rory's photo in another forum, but you'll get the idea of the bit I'm on about.

sounds like an optical angle (and therefore velocity) encoder:

http://abrobotics.tripod.com/Ebot/using_encoder.htm

How smashed up was it? If the disc is still in one piece, you should be ok - they are normally enclosed in automotive applications to stop junk and crap cloging the slots in the disc (hence screwing up the angle measurement).
Once you're happy you've got the code wheel (circular bit with slots) and the encoder (small black box with wires going in!) sorted (if you can't see the encoder and it works - leave it!) then if you can, a piece of gaffer tape to hold the casing together and to keep the crap out.

HTH,

Anna
