I have some other Aesthetic plans this year also. But that will depend on the
level I spend finishing the engine lol !

Never ending project, i know all too well :D Will be following, i'd look into water injection too since we can't get E85 so easily here

So a little update on some things that I wanted to get sorted, I have a
whiteboard in the garage that has "small" and "large" jobs to do on the car.
A couple of which were to paint the space saver as I was sick and tired of
that 24 year old faded yellow. Another was to sand, prepare and treat some
very light surface rust on the slam panel. Along with the final and more tricky
job of creating make shift covers for the suspension top mounts.

The problem with the coilovers is that they allow dirt and water through the top
and gets the Frunk dirty inside. which also leads to slight corrosion on the body
and components over time.

My dad gave me a sheet of thick foam that I measured out the internal
diameter of the hole being 65mm. Then did my best job with a knife to cut it
out and make another incision for the dampening knob. This works quite well
to be honest, but will be a template for a metal cap I will have made.

Image
Image
Image

As you can see there is some light surface rust around the mounting holes
that I will deal with.

I started on the slam panel, by sanding back with A80 and then applying
Kurust.

Image
Image

I have left to dry and will treat the suspension mounts in the same fashion
then will find paint to cover and try and match the OEM grey of the frunk.
or section those parts out with masking tape and use black paint.

Onto the main job, which I actually did prior to the above, but hey.
removed the space saver and got to sanding.

Image
Image

After an hour or so, It was ready to clean off. Used my recently given generator
and air line to clean, then with the help of the misses, masked up the wheel
for its first coat of primer.

Image
Image

I applied 3 coats of primer over a few hour period.
then got to the first coat of the SMG rattle can paint that I bought from Ebay.
To be honest its a really close match so very happy.

Image

However as you can see made the mistake of knocking the can on the wheel
whilst spraying #-o So left the wheel to dry over night and then sanded the
mark out and recovered with SMG on the latter coats of paint.

Image
Image

Cant see a thing ! :D But not content with making one mistake, in haste
sprayed to much lacquer on the second coat and had some pretty nasty runs.

Video: Image

So just waited for it to dry and went through the same process I did with the
mark as above. And again very happy with the result. At the end of the day.
This isn't supposed to be impeccable, just to tidy up the Frunk.

But here is the final effort. 8)

Image

Whilst I was at it, I used "Black to the future" trim and tyre shine on the
Frunk shroud. And applied a YVS sticker.

Image

I will get a few snaps of it all back together on the weekend.

So instead of just putting the car back together, I decided that with the success
of the spare wheel I would paint the strut braces. Along with tackling two
problem area's for corrosion, mostly caused by the strut tower openings.

Image
Image

I started by sanding back the corrosion and then applying KuRust directly on
top of it, then sanded back smooth and started masking up the area's for paint.

Image
Image

I decided to paint the first coats of paint with Hammerite with a brush, this way
could get thick coats down. However I should have just masked up the whole
bay and sprayed straight off as I ended up having to do this anyway !

Image
Image

Brush marks ! wasn't having any of that and didn't expect to get it, but sanded
the paint back to a smooth finish and then began the process of masking up
the Frunk properly for coats with a can.

Image

Few coats down, Slam panel looked great however there must have been some
residual silicone in the strut tower recesses and the paint reacted. So I had to
leave it to dry and sand back the following day and re-apply more coats. #-o

Image
Image

But after many coats of black and then around 4 coats of lacquer to give it a
nice finish both area's were dry and ready to remove the masking.

Image
Image

The foam inserts I had created actually worked amazing for stopping any paint
getting onto the coilover top mounts, but I had something that I discovered
would work perfectly ready to replace.

Image

65mm wire tidy desk cups
They fit perfectly in the recess and look OEM even having the hole in the exact
position the dampening adjuster sits !!

Image

During the drying time between coats, I was prepping the strut braces. The
OEM Toyota brace was easy as was only painted black. Whereas the TOM's
braces were powder coated. Making them a nightmare to sand back.

Image
Image
Image

The DA on compressor I have definitely helped, even if it only gave me 15
seconds on full blast each time

I hung them in the garage and began painting.

Image
Image
Image

Yet stupidly decided to use a filler primer to fill any imperfections after using
standard primer, and had a massive reaction over the TOM's braces FFS.

Image

So whilst I was at work, My mate sanded them back and re-sprayed with
primer for me as I didn't have the time and just wanted to get them back on
the car.

Image

I didn't get any photos of the TOM's braces once I finally finished them,
But did on the OEM toyota one.

Image
Image

Now was time to put them all back together, making sure I torqued back up
as the BGB said.

Well worth all the effort.

Now after lots of small updates on the car, time for probably the biggest and
most expensive thing the cars had done to it. Finally time to finish the engine.
After sorting a decent finance option I took the plunge and bought the following
from Paul @ TCB Parts.

. Garrett G25 660 VBand .72ar
. Tubular manifold YVS hand built ( Vband )
. Fuel Injection Clinic 1000cc Injectors
. Top Feed Fuel Rail ( HKS replica ) 11mm
. 4 x Injector Plug & Play Connectors
. Walbro 450lph fuel pump
. Daeschtwerks fuel pressure regulator 1000
. Go Faster Bits FPR gauge
. Tial V44mm external WG

I also ordered a turbo blanket from Exo Racing, that was recommended to me
from a mate.

Image
Image
Image

Image
Image
Image

So all the parts arrived. As you can see I forgot to take a photo of the fuel rail
but its identical, albeit blue. Whilst I was waiting for the parts to arrive myself
and Simon @ YVS discussed the options of how and what we were planning to
do. One being where we intended to map the car.

I had been in contact with Will at Race Dyno Tuning in Doncaster due to his
speciality in mapping this new generation of Turbo, so will be using his hub
based dyno for the new engine modifications.

Next up was getting the car to Simon, This is where things got frankly
ridiculous. Im not going to retype it on here, but if you want to read a ludicrous
story, Its worthwhile !

https://www.facebook.com/512026100/post ... 01?sfns=mo

So once the car was finally delivered I could rest easy and started receiving
photos of the work.

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

Fuel pump swapped over and located in the tank.

Image
Image

Beginning of the manifold being created.

Image
Image

Fuel rail and FRP + gauge fitted along with injectors.
Now the cool stuff. Manifold building !

Image
Image
Image
Image

Simon built up a scrap block so that his fabricator had something to work off.
the above photos show this and that the pipes are just tac' welded in place.
Then it began to take shape.

Image
Image
Image

And the last photos I have received to date.

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

:D 8)

Cant wait to get her to mapping once finished. Oil and Water lines being
created, along with the custom downpipe and waste gate pipe.

The bay will look great, but not really great until I paint that dam cam cover
and inlet manifold + TB !!

Downpipe created and WG fitted, next up will be creating the new pipe running
from the SMIC intake. The downpipe is only tac'ed in place as the manifold was
but will be properly welded once all angles are done.

Only just found your build thread on here, after getting a couple of pages in I realised it was the MR2 that was on Monky London! Read through it all last night..

Definitely some ups and downs in there!! Good read though.

Lovely MR2, actually really helped me in my choice to finally get one!

I'm watching this build with anticipation now, interesting choice in turbo. Will be cool to see the results of the newer G series turbo. The custom manifold looks Awesome. What sort of spool up / power do you reckon you'll get?

Hi Bud

Glad you had a good read through, been quite a bit of work putting it all
together, but worth it in the end. Yes but the ups have far outweighed the
downs, Its a great car. And I've definitely learnt lots along the way.

Toby ( Monky London ) and me became mates after the video and will most
definitely be doing another video once this latest round of mods is finished.

TBH when it comes to power and spool etc, I'm just waiting to see really,
I think my biggest limitation will be cooling. So will just have to see how it
pans out.

Keep your eye's on here, not many people on the forums now, which is a
shame. But I'll always upload this page with the cars story. Unless I decide
to one day transfer it onto my own blog style format like "Apex Attack"
but I cant say I have his same interesting content

The info I've seen from a gt4
1bar is @ 3700. Full boost @ 4K 1.8bar 490 bhp.

He has 4k rpm of power band. Vs the old 3076 which was like 2k rpm. The g25 peak power was 7600 rpm

This was the g25 660 .71 ar.

Hoping to start mine this weekend. Maybe we should meet up.for some mapping haha.

Running the bigger ar over yours.

Also the other comments was it's so smooth, no huge kicks like the old set up.

Post by JLW »

And here we are, received the finished photos from Simon: ( albeit minus strut
brace fitted )

Image
Image
Image

So I organised between Simon at YVS and Will at Race Dyno Tuning the best
day to meet and organise the mapping. Which turned out to be Monday the
30th of September.

problem being is that Will needed to start at 9am, and RDT is 30 minutes south
of Doncaster. Me living on the Ashdown forrest in the south meant that its a
near 4 hour trip involving a 5am start, two trains, a tube and a taxi and even
then I wouldn't get there till 9:40am. And because of this Simon very
thankfully drove the car down followed by Liz ( his wife ) to RDT about an hour
south of YVS.

So myself and my stepson who had traveled up with me for the day finally got
there just as they were finishing plugging in the mapping gear.

Image
Image
Image

Hours of mapping later we were starting to build up the power, after sorting
a base map and altering idle and other things etc. It started getting interesting.

VIDEO:
https://i.imgur.com/2gOTNSl.mp4

We started building up boost, but then hit a snag. And potentially a very bad
one. The fuel pressure reg gauge was showing heavy pulsing that could be felt
on the top of the FPR.

VIDEO:
https://i.imgur.com/vCggt9A.mp4

We tried to figure out what could be causing this. One
thought was that maybe the fuel gauge in the car was incorrectly reading,
which has never happened before but it's worth a try. So Liz very kindly
drove a very very stressed Jordan to the closest Shell garage to fill up a 20ltr
can with V Power.

The nightmare of potentially having to have the car shipped back to YVS to
inspect an issue in the fuel tank and then pay another £150 worth of tickets
back home on the train was not doing by mental state well.

However I arrived back to Simon telling me he thought he had cracked it,
and he had. It turned out to be the OEM resistor for the fuel pressure wire had
been damaged during the heavy boost loading sessions, where Will loads up
the dyno to replicate heavy load but then applies heavy boost. Doesn't sound
good and Simons not a big fan of it due to the excessive heat it produces but
each mappers different on how they get their results. And Will gets good
results.

Anyway heart attack averted we cracked on with the mapping, now being
close to 6pm and the nights drawing in and an entire UK storm about to hit
we came to an end ( we thought  )

Final power figure attained.

Image

363whp / 425bhp* @ 1.4 bar of boost
* approx based on a half way between 15% and 20% transmission loss.

This was with only 21 degrees centigrade of intake temps which is incredibly
cool, and seeing as heat was always going to be out biggest limiting factor.
shows very good scope for more power.

The goal was always to make a great road car, road useable power not some
dyno queen. Progressive power with a smooth delivery but a fun shove at the
end. Will has definitely done that ! We were at 7pm now and had been mapping
since 10am ! As said there is scope for more power easily, but with the OEM
map sensor only running to 1.5 bar of boost 1.4 was the top. So all thats
needed if I decide to, is buy an aftermarket larger map sensor and up the boost
and map.

All was not done though... Simon advised me to take the car up the road, by
now in the hammering rain and dark to make sure it drove ok, it hit boost cut.
#-o So I drove back to RDT and Will cam out to confirm and we took it back
rose the boost cut level to 1.7 as it was set at 1.5.

This fixed the issue, and me and Ollie were on our way home. Near on 4 hours
of the worst conditions I've ever driven in, with AD08r's :? yeah it was
stressful. But we got home.

Ive had two days to drive it in good weather since, and it does not disappoint.
the noises it makes are insane, the G25 is like a jet engine behind your ear.
making all manor of turbo sounds.

And most importantly it drives great, with added madness :thumleft:

Next up, painting lots of parts to make the bay look like its had the money I've
spent !

Nice bud, what level of boost did you make that with. What turbo & setup etc.
